Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 10 leading the 1984 F1 World Championship on 35.5 points, with Elio de Angelis on 26. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 59.5 points.

Race entries

Stefan Johansson replaced the injured Brundle at Tyrrell, which continued amid its appeal against exclusion from the championship. Johnny Cecotto’s serious Friday accident left Ayrton Senna as Toleman’s only starter. The organisers allowed all 27 remaining entrants to start, including Jo Gartner’s second Osella.

Friday Free Practice

Ayrton Senna set the fastest time on Friday morning, showing that Toleman’s recent progress extended beyond street circuits. The session also brought a serious accident for Johnny Cecotto, who broke both legs and would not return to Formula 1. Brabham’s revised specification was proving disappointing, leaving Nelson Piquet well short of his usual pace.

Friday Qualifying

Alain Prost headed Friday qualifying ahead of Niki Lauda and de Elio de Angelis. Ayrton Senna’s fourth place confirmed that his morning speed had been genuine, while Nelson Piquet continued to struggle with the revised Brabham.

Saturday Qualifying

Nelson Piquet recovered to take pole on Saturday with 1:10.869. Alain Prost and Niki Lauda followed, ahead of de Elio de Angelis, Keke Rosberg and Derek Warwick. Ayrton Senna’s Friday time left him seventh overall after a less successful final session.

What happened in the 1984 British Grand Prix?

An opening-lap accident eliminated several cars, but Nelson Piquet and the McLarens pulled clear. Alain Prost and Niki Lauda passed the Brabham just as Jonathan Palmer’s crash brought out the red flag. The restart order reverted to lap 11, restoring Nelson Piquet to the front, and the final result would combine the times from both parts.

Alain Prost led the restart, with Niki Lauda passing Nelson Piquet before his team-mate retired with gearbox trouble. Niki Lauda then controlled the race. Nelson Piquet later lost turbo boost and dropped out of the points, while Ayrton Senna kept pressure on de Elio de Angelis before passing him near the finish.

Niki Lauda won on aggregate over 71 laps, with Derek Warwick second and Ayrton Senna third. De Elio de Angelis finished fourth ahead of Michele Alboreto and Rene Arnoux. Alain Prost’s retirement made the championship much closer, with only one and a half points now separating the McLaren drivers.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 35.5 points, followed by Niki Lauda on 33. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 68.5, with Ferrari on 35.5.
