Championship background

The new season brought a ban on race refuelling and a 220-litre fuel limit for turbocharged cars. McLaren paired Alain Prost with Niki Lauda, while reigning champion Nelson Piquet began his defence in Brabham’s new BT53. Tyre stops remained permitted, making the balance between speed, fuel consumption and tyre life central to race strategy.

Race entries

Alain Prost returned to McLaren, Michele Alboreto joined Ferrari, and Renault fielded Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay. Ayrton Senna made his debut with Toleman, while Brundle and Bellof formed Tyrrell’s new line-up. Teo Fabi joined Nelson Piquet at Brabham, with his brother Corrado due to deputise when Teo’s American commitments clashed.

Friday Free Practice

Friday’s preparation revealed how differently the new cars had developed over the winter. De Elio de Angelis changed the Lotus’s aerodynamic set-up during the untimed session, while Williams struggled with understeer. Brabham was still short of mileage with its BT53, and Fabi lost time to throttle-linkage and gearbox problems.

Friday Qualifying

Nigel Mansell headed Friday qualifying, giving Lotus an encouraging start with its Renault-powered 95T. The contest remained open, with Ferrari, Renault and McLaren all looking capable of challenging.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday brought further work on cooling and balance. Nigel Mansell changed his Lotus’s aerodynamic configuration before final qualifying after finding his engine temperatures higher than de Elio de Angelis’s. Renault also moved back towards the higher-downforce settings used in testing, improving the behaviour of its cars after an uncertain start to the meeting.

Saturday Qualifying

De Elio de Angelis took pole on Saturday ahead of Michele Alboreto and Derek Warwick. Alain Prost qualified fourth and Nigel Mansell fifth after a spin interrupted his challenge. Ayrton Senna started seventeenth, while Manfred Winkelhock’s exclusion allowed Jonathan Palmer onto the grid.

Sunday warm-up

Niki Lauda and Alain Prost led the warm-up, showing that McLaren’s race pace was stronger than its grid positions suggested. The half-hour session was especially significant under the new fuel rules: the teams had to prepare for a full race without replenishing their tanks. Alain Prost was also still learning the starting characteristics of his new car.

What happened in the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix?

Michele Alboreto led early, while Alain Prost lost ground at the start and had to fight back. Niki Lauda moved through to take control, but an electrical failure ended his race. Michele Alboreto had already been delayed by brake trouble, and Nelson Piquet’s unhappy home race ended with engine failure.

Derek Warwick looked capable of winning as the tyre stops unfolded, but suspension damage from earlier contact with Niki Lauda eventually forced him out. Alain Prost inherited the lead and pulled clear. Ayrton Senna’s debut had ended much earlier with a turbo failure.

Alain Prost won from Keke Rosberg and de Elio de Angelis, with Eddie Cheever fourth. Brundle initially finished fifth, but Tyrrell’s subsequent exclusion from the season promoted Patrick Tambay and Thierry Boutsen into the final two points positions. The revised result is used in the tables below.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 9 points, followed by Keke Rosberg on 6. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 9, with Williams – Honda on 6.
