Championship background

Niki Lauda arrived at round 15 leading the 1984 F1 World Championship on 63 points, with Alain Prost on 53.5. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 116.5 points.

Race entries

Ayrton Senna returned to Toleman alongside Stefan Johansson. Mauro Baldi replaced Huub Rothengatter at Spirit, and ATS ran Gerhard Berger alone after Manfred Winkelhock’s departure. Tyrrell remained excluded, leaving 26 entrants for the new Grand Prix layout.

Friday Free Practice

Friday morning was dry and sunny, allowing the teams to investigate the new circuit’s demands. Derek Warwick was unhappy with Renault’s electronic injection and changed cars, while McLaren had problems with both of its machines. Those delays mattered when rain arrived just as qualifying was about to begin.

Friday Qualifying

Nelson Piquet seized the best conditions at the start of Friday qualifying and set 1:18.871 before the rain intensified. Alain Prost and Patrick Tambay improved when the track began drying later, taking second and third. Niki Lauda’s misfire left him fifteenth.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday morning repeatedly tempted the teams into changing settings. A wet track appeared to be drying before drizzle returned, leaving engineers switching between wet and dry configurations. With conditions so unstable, useful preparation depended on learning the circuit’s behaviour rather than simply chasing a quick lap.

Saturday Qualifying

Saturday’s rain prevented any challenge to Friday’s times. De Elio de Angelis was fastest in the wet, while the McLaren drivers completed longer runs to understand the conditions. Nelson Piquet retained pole, and Niki Lauda faced a substantial recovery from the eighth row.

Sunday warm-up

Alain Prost spun during the warm-up and hit a rescue vehicle parked beside the circuit. His McLaren needed suspension repairs and an engine change after ingesting dirt, while Niki Lauda retained the team’s spare. The mechanics completed the work in time, allowing Alain Prost to take his front-row position in the rebuilt car.

What happened in the 1984 European Grand Prix?

Alain Prost took the lead at the start as an accident behind him eliminated several cars, including Ayrton Senna and Keke Rosberg. Nelson Piquet pursued, but the McLaren remained in command. Michele Alboreto moved into contention while Niki Lauda worked forward from his poor grid position.

Fuel consumption shaped the closing stages. Michele Alboreto and Nelson Piquet both reached the finish with almost nothing left in their tanks, while Alain Prost completed a controlled victory. Niki Lauda’s recovery brought him fourth, preserving the championship lead.

Alain Prost won from Michele Alboreto and Nelson Piquet, with Niki Lauda fourth, Rene Arnoux fifth and Riccardo Patrese sixth. After the redistribution of Tyrrell’s earlier points was confirmed, Niki Lauda’s advantage stood at three and a half points heading to the final round in Portugal.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 66 points, followed by Alain Prost on 62.5. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 128.5, with Ferrari on 54.5.
