Championship background

Niki Lauda arrived at round 13 leading the 1984 F1 World Championship on 48 points, with Alain Prost on 44.5. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 92.5 points.

Race entries

The regular field continued, with Stefan Johansson still replacing Brundle at Tyrrell. The team remained present pending its appeal, and all 27 entrants were allowed to start. Huub Rothengatter’s Spirit wore orange for his home race, although his practice programme was disrupted by accident damage and engine trouble.

Friday Free Practice

Nelson Piquet’s special qualifying Brabham gave trouble on Friday morning, leaving him to rely on his race car for the timed session. Elsewhere, the familiar mechanical problems continued: Ayrton Senna had a misfire, Nigel Mansell engine trouble and Keke Rosberg understeer. Huub Rothengatter’s preparations were particularly difficult after his newer Spirit was damaged.

Friday Qualifying

Nelson Piquet was fastest on Friday with 1:13.872 in his race car, ahead of de Elio de Angelis. Alain Prost was more than a second behind, leaving McLaren with work to do before the final session.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday’s dry conditions offered another chance to improve, but the changing wind added a new variable. Ferrari continued trying rear-suspension revisions, eventually fitting a layout both drivers preferred. Brabham still had to resolve the difference between its race and qualifying cars before Nelson Piquet’s final attempt.

Saturday Qualifying

Alain Prost responded on Saturday with 1:13.567 to take pole. Nelson Piquet switched cars for a late attempt, but the lowered front ride height contributed to a spin into the barriers. His Friday time still secured second, ahead of de Elio de Angelis, while Niki Lauda qualified sixth.

Sunday warm-up

The warm-up was delayed after a staircase collapsed in the paddock and medical teams attended the injured. Once running began, McLaren again looked strong in race trim, although Niki Lauda needed a turbocharger change. His team also dealt with a late radiator leak before he could take his place on the grid.

What happened in the 1984 Dutch Grand Prix?

Nelson Piquet made an excellent start and pulled away, only for an engine problem to end his race after ten laps. Alain Prost inherited the lead as Niki Lauda advanced through the field. The McLarens then established a clear advantage over the rest.

Keke Rosberg had to reduce his pace to save fuel, allowing the Lotus drivers to challenge. Nigel Mansell emerged ahead after a close fight with de Elio de Angelis, while Alain Prost and Niki Lauda managed their lead. Thierry Boutsen survived a frightening collision as Rene Arnoux slowed to enter the pits.

Alain Prost won from Niki Lauda, with Nigel Mansell third and de Elio de Angelis fourth. Patrick Tambay and Fabi completed the points. McLaren secured the constructors’ championship, while Alain Prost reduced Niki Lauda’s drivers’ lead to one and a half points.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 54 points, followed by Alain Prost on 53.5. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 107.5, with Lotus – Renault on 45.
