Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 11 leading the 1984 F1 World Championship on 35.5 points, with Niki Lauda on 33. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 68.5 points.

Race entries

Ayrton Senna continued alone for Toleman while Johnny Cecotto recovered from his injuries. Stefan Johansson remained alongside Bellof at Tyrrell. The leading teams brought further developments, including a revised rear wing on Ayrton Senna’s new car and additional suspension experiments at Ferrari.

Friday Free Practice

Friday morning began in sunshine, with teams working on the low-drag settings required for Hockenheim’s forest straights. Ayrton Senna was again close to the leading group in his new Toleman. Williams had a much more difficult opening day, while Ferrari tried to turn its latest suspension changes into a competitive balance.

Friday Qualifying

De Elio de Angelis was fastest on Friday, with late oil from Patrick Tambay’s failed engine preventing further serious improvements. Keke Rosberg’s problems left him at the bottom of the order and especially dependent on a dry second session.

Saturday Free Practice

Rain soaked Saturday morning practice, leaving the drivers on wet tyres and offering little useful comparison with Friday’s dry running. The weather improved near the end of the session, giving those with poor first-day times hope of a recovery. Ferrari ultimately returned to its earlier suspension arrangement as the drivers preferred its behaviour.

Saturday Qualifying

The circuit dried during Saturday qualifying and Alain Prost took pole ahead of de Elio de Angelis. Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay filled the second row, with Nelson Piquet fifth. Niki Lauda qualified seventh after a spin, while Ayrton Senna relied on his Friday time for ninth.

Sunday warm-up

Niki Lauda’s throttle stuck open in the warm-up, and an ignition-switch problem complicated stopping the engine. Alain Prost also reported an engine problem, while Huub Rothengatter’s Spirit needed its spare after an engine failure. McLaren had time to work before the afternoon start, but its final preparation was far from straightforward.

What happened in the 1984 German Grand Prix?

De Elio de Angelis led at the start before retiring with engine failure. Nelson Piquet then passed Alain Prost and took control, with Niki Lauda moving into third. Ayrton Senna crashed after a rear-wing failure, and several other cars succumbed to the mechanical demands of the circuit.

Nelson Piquet lost the ability to select several gears and had to retire, handing the race to the McLarens. Alain Prost remained ahead of Niki Lauda, while Derek Warwick established himself as the best of the rest. Both Williams drivers also retired during another difficult afternoon for the team.

Alain Prost won ahead of Niki Lauda and Derek Warwick, extending his advantage over his team-mate by three points. Nigel Mansell finished fourth, Patrick Tambay fifth and Rene Arnoux sixth. It proved to be Derek Warwick’s final Formula 1 podium, while McLaren strengthened its already commanding constructors’ lead.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 44.5 points, followed by Niki Lauda on 39. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 83.5, with Lotus – Renault on 38.
