Championship background

Niki Lauda arrived at round 14 leading the 1984 F1 World Championship on 54 points, with Alain Prost on 53.5. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 107.5 points.

Race entries

Tyrrell was absent after its appeal failed. Toleman suspended Ayrton Senna following his agreement to join Lotus, bringing in Stefan Johansson and giving Martini his first Formula 1 weekend. Gerhard Berger continued in the second ATS, while Jo Gartner drove the second Osella; both additional entries were ineligible for championship points.

Friday Free Practice

Friday morning offered little encouragement to Ferrari despite revised rear bodywork. Nelson Piquet and the McLarens remained quicker, while Manfred Winkelhock damaged his ATS after a broken driveshaft also damaged the suspension. Jo Gartner hit the barriers too, and a light shower at the end of the session complicated preparation for qualifying.

Friday Qualifying

De Elio de Angelis was fastest on Friday as the track dried, ahead of Nelson Piquet. Michele Alboreto briefly gave Ferrari some encouragement, but the changing conditions meant the order was far from settled.

Saturday Free Practice

Engine trouble dominated Saturday morning. Jonathan Palmer needed another replacement, Alain Prost switched to the spare McLaren, and Marc Surer lost oil pressure in his Arrows. Niki Lauda also strained his back and required treatment before qualifying. The dry conditions promised faster times, but several teams were still repairing their cars.

Saturday Qualifying

Nelson Piquet attacked early on Saturday and took pole with 1:26.584. Alain Prost came close but remained second, with de Elio de Angelis and Niki Lauda on the next row. Martini was the only driver to miss the grid after struggling to learn the unfamiliar Toleman.

Sunday warm-up

The warm-up triggered another rush of work. Both McLarens developed water leaks, Williams had engine problems, and Stefan Johansson preferred the spare Toleman’s chassis but his race car’s engine. Ferrari’s drivers returned to older-specification cars, while Brabham replaced Nelson Piquet’s troublesome turbocharger before the start.

What happened in the 1984 Italian Grand Prix?

Nelson Piquet led as Alain Prost moved into second, but the McLaren’s engine failed early. Patrick Tambay inherited the pursuit before Nelson Piquet also retired. Fabi recovered from a spin to challenge the Renault, with Niki Lauda waiting close behind.

Niki Lauda passed Fabi and then Patrick Tambay to take the lead. Both rivals soon retired, leaving Michele Alboreto second as attrition continued through the field. Eddie Cheever and Piercarlo Ghinzani ran out of fuel, while Riccardo Patrese moved ahead of Stefan Johansson to secure third.

Niki Lauda won from Michele Alboreto and Riccardo Patrese, with Stefan Johansson fourth. Jo Gartner and Gerhard Berger finished fifth and sixth but received no points because their additional entries were not eligible. Niki Lauda’s championship lead grew to ten and a half points with two rounds remaining.

After the race, Niki Lauda headed the drivers’ standings with 63 points, followed by Alain Prost on 53.5. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 116.5, with Ferrari on 46.5.
