Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 14 leading the 1985 F1 World Championship on 69 points, with Michele Alboreto on 53. McLaren – TAG headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 83 points.

Race entries

John Watson returned to McLaren for one race while Niki Lauda recovered from his wrist injury. Ivan Capelli made his debut alongside Martin Brundle at Tyrrell, and Alan Jones brought Haas Lola back after its enforced absence from Belgium. Christian Danner continued to deputise for Jonathan Palmer at Zakspeed.

Friday Free Practice

The teams began Friday with considerable knowledge from recent testing at Brands Hatch. Williams was working with revised rear suspension on its race cars, while its spare retained the earlier arrangement. John Watson and Ivan Capelli faced a different task: one was reacquainting himself with Grand Prix machinery, the other beginning his first Formula 1 weekend.

Friday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna set the pace in Friday qualifying as Lotus again made excellent use of its qualifying performance. Nelson Piquet was his closest rival, while the Williams pair also looked capable of making the front of the grid.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday’s running continued the contrast between Lotus’s pace and Ferrari’s difficulties. Ayrton Senna had the confidence to attack the fast corners, while the Ferraris struggled for traction and competitive lap times. With Michele Alboreto needing a major result to keep the championship alive, those handling problems were particularly costly.

Saturday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna claimed pole with 1:07.169, ahead of Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell and Keke Rosberg. Philippe Streiff impressed with fifth for Ligier, one place ahead of Alain Prost. Michele Alboreto could manage only fifteenth, leaving Ferrari’s championship challenger with a great deal to do.

Sunday warm-up

Nelson Piquet headed the Sunday warm-up, giving Brabham encouragement that its Pirelli tyres could support a genuine challenge from the front row. The session reinforced the prospect of a close contest between several teams, rather than a straightforward Ayrton Senna victory. Alain Prost’s priority remained a clean race and the points needed to settle the title.

What happened in the 1985 European Grand Prix?

Ayrton Senna led the opening laps, but the fight behind him soon changed the race. Keke Rosberg spun while attacking the Lotus and Nelson Piquet hit the Williams, retiring with damaged suspension. Keke Rosberg continued after a tyre stop and rejoined just ahead of the leaders; as Ayrton Senna was delayed, Nigel Mansell moved through into first place.

Nigel Mansell built his advantage while Marc Surer climbed to second before a late turbo failure ended his challenge. Michele Alboreto had already retired, leaving Alain Prost to concentrate on the points he needed. The Frenchman recovered from a poor first lap and allowed the charging Keke Rosberg through rather than risk the championship in a late duel.

Nigel Mansell took his maiden victory ahead of Ayrton Senna and Keke Rosberg. Alain Prost’s fourth place made him World Champion for the first time, with de Elio de Angelis fifth and Thierry Boutsen sixth. John Watson narrowly missed a point in what proved to be his final Formula 1 appearance.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 72 points, followed by Michele Alboreto on 53. McLaren – TAG led the constructors’ table on 86, with Ferrari on 77.
