Alain Prost revived his championship challenge with victory at the 1988 Portuguese Grand Prix, while Ivan Capelli delivered a superb second place for March. A tense early battle between the McLaren drivers set the tone at Autódromo do Estoril, before Ayrton Senna’s fuel-readout problems left him sixth.

Championship background
Ayrton Senna arrived at round 13 leading the 1988 F1 World Championship on 75 points, with Alain Prost on 72. McLaren – Honda headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 147 points.
Race entries
Nigel Mansell returned to Williams after missing Belgium and Italy through illness. Alain Prost had a new McLaren chassis, while March arrived with increasing confidence in the speed of its Judd-powered car. The race line-ups otherwise remained familiar as the championship entered its final four rounds.
Pre-qualifying
Oscar Larrauri missed out in the opening-practice elimination, leaving Stefano Modena as EuroBrun’s only representative in main qualifying. Alex Caffi, Nicola Larini and Gabriele Tarquini also advanced. Clearing the preliminary cut did not guarantee a race start, as Stefano Modena would discover in the main sessions.

Friday Free Practice
Ayrton Senna led Friday morning in 1:18.537, with Alain Prost less than half a second behind as he settled into his new chassis. Luis Pérez-Sala interrupted the session with a substantial accident in the Minardi. Grip was a recurring concern on the lightly used surface, particularly for Arrows after its much stronger showing at Monza, and the teams had to build confidence before pushing harder in qualifying.

Friday Qualifying
Ayrton Senna led Friday qualifying in 1:18.032, ahead of Alain Prost’s 1:18.378. The McLarens again held the leading positions, but March was becoming a serious contender immediately behind them. Nigel Mansell’s return also added another competitive naturally aspirated car to the fight.

Saturday Free Practice
Alain Prost was quickest on Saturday morning by more than a second over Gerhard Berger. The stiffer replacement chassis suited him, while March’s balance through the fast corners was giving Ivan Capelli and Maurício Mauricio Gugelmin an opportunity to challenge near the front. The shift in form was striking: the cars that had relied on straight-line power in Italy now needed a more complete response through Estoril’s linked corners.

Saturday Qualifying
Alain Prost set 1:17.411 early on Saturday and could afford to sit out the closing contest. Ayrton Senna could not beat it, while Ivan Capelli took an outstanding third ahead of Gerhard Berger and Mauricio Gugelmin. Nigel Mansell qualified sixth on his return. Stefano Modena, Julian Bailey and both Zakspeed drivers failed to make the grid.

Sunday warm-up
Alain Prost also topped the warm-up, narrowly ahead of Thierry Boutsen. Fuel consumption remained a concern for McLaren, and Alain Prost still wanted to improve the handling before the start, choosing a different front-wing arrangement from Ayrton Senna. The pole-sitter also faced a dusty side of the grid. Those final details would matter in a race whose opening stages were anything but straightforward.

What happened in the 1988 Portuguese Grand Prix?
The start required several attempts, including a red flag after a collision involving Derek Warwick’s stalled Arrows. Once the race was properly under way, Ayrton Senna led, but Alain Prost attacked on the main straight at the start of lap two. Ayrton Senna moved towards the pit wall as his team-mate came alongside; Alain Prost held his course and completed the pass into the first corner.
Alain Prost pulled clear while Ayrton Senna struggled with misleading fuel information. Ivan Capelli passed the McLaren and established himself in second. Gerhard Berger also challenged before spinning out, and Nigel Mansell’s return ended in retirement. Ayrton Senna eventually stopped for tyres and lost further positions, leaving his title rival to maximise the opportunity.
Alain Prost won by 9.496 seconds from Ivan Capelli. Thierry Boutsen took third after Michele Alboreto ran short of fuel near the finish, with Derek Warwick fourth, Michele Alboreto fifth and Ayrton Senna sixth. March’s result was a major reward for its chassis development, while the confrontation between the McLaren drivers added tension to their championship battle.
After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 81 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 76. McLaren – Honda led the constructors’ table on 157, with Ferrari on 61.
