Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 6 leading the 1988 F1 World Championship on 39 points, with Ayrton Senna on 24. McLaren – Honda headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 63 points.

Race entries

Pierluigi Martini replaced Adrián Adrian Campos at Minardi, returning to the team he had driven for in its first Formula 1 season. March was reduced to one starter after Ivan Capelli fractured a bone in his foot in a Saturday accident. His withdrawal allowed Nicola Larini’s Osella onto the grid.

Pre-qualifying

Alex Caffi headed pre-qualifying in the Dallara, with the two EuroBruns and Andrea de Cesaris also advancing. Gabriele Tarquini was eliminated after a troubled opening session with the Coloni. As at the earlier rounds, this contest formed part of Friday morning’s running rather than a separate qualifying format for the whole field.

Friday Free Practice

The first morning demanded care over Detroit’s bumps, railway crossings and unforgiving concrete walls. Alain Prost was fastest in 1:41.410, but the session formed part of a difficult opening day that included Nelson Piquet damaging his Lotus. Finding a quick lap was only part of the challenge: drivers needed a car they could trust through repeated changes of surface and direction, with very little room to recover a mistake.

Friday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna’s Friday lap of 1:40.606 secured provisional pole by a substantial margin over Alain Prost. The tight street circuit had been expected to offer the naturally aspirated cars an opportunity, but the leading McLaren was again beyond their reach. As temperatures rose, completing a lap on a relatively clear and intact surface became increasingly important.

Saturday Free Practice

Ayrton Senna headed Saturday morning in 1:40.177, narrowly ahead of Alain Prost. Conditions were becoming a central concern as the heat attacked the track surface. Saturday’s running also brought a major setback for March when Ivan Capelli crashed and injured his foot. With the grip changing and loose material appearing, the drivers faced an increasingly uncertain circuit rather than a straightforward progression towards quicker times.

Saturday Qualifying

Saturday’s slower conditions left Ayrton Senna’s Friday time unbeaten. Gerhard Berger headed the second session, with Michele Alboreto close behind, and both Ferraris moved ahead of Alain Prost overall. Satoru Nakajima and the two Zakspeed drivers failed to qualify. Ivan Capelli’s withdrawal changed the final starting line-up, allowing Nicola Larini to take the last place.

Sunday warm-up

Overnight repairs left the teams assessing a patched surface on Sunday morning. Alain Prost narrowly beat Ayrton Senna in the warm-up, but the larger question was how tyres would withstand the abrasive repairs and continued heat. Stefano Modena returned after hospital observation following his Saturday accident. The final session helped establish a starting point, although nobody could assume that the track would remain in the same condition throughout the race.

What happened in the 1988 Detroit Grand Prix?

Ayrton Senna led away while Alain Prost had to clear the Ferraris. Once the second McLaren reached second place, its driver faced a substantial deficit as well as a reluctant gearbox. Behind them, contact between Thierry Boutsen and Gerhard Berger ended the Ferrari’s race, and a separate clash between Alessandro Nannini and Michele Alboreto further disrupted the chasing group.

The Williams cars both retired, while the track continued to deteriorate. Ayrton Senna dealt with the changing grip and traffic without losing control of the race. Alain Prost could not mount a sustained challenge, and Thierry Boutsen emerged as the best of the rest for the second consecutive weekend.

Ayrton Senna finished 38.713 seconds ahead of Alain Prost, with everyone else at least a lap behind. De Andrea de Cesaris took fourth for the new Rial team. Jonathan Palmer recovered from an early stop for a replacement nose to finish fifth, and Pierluigi Martini marked his return with sixth for Minardi. It proved to be Formula 1’s final race on the Detroit street circuit.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 45 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 33. McLaren – Honda led the constructors’ table on 78, with Ferrari on 27.
