Alan Jones beat the Ligiers at Paul Ricard to regain the championship lead. Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite completed the podium after Jacques Laffite’s early advantage faded. The full field reunited following the political dispute that had stripped the Spanish race of championship status.

Championship background

Nelson Piquet arrived at round 7 leading the 1980 F1 World Championship on 22 points, with René Arnoux on 21. Williams – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 34 points.

Race entries

Marc Surer returned to ATS after recovering from his South African injuries. Jan Lammers moved to Ensign, while Shadow made what would prove its final World Championship appearance. The FISA–FOCA dispute had threatened participation, but agreement allowed all the established teams to compete.

Friday Free Practice

Friday’s running was delayed until after 11:00 while a replacement medical helicopter was arranged. Strong winds influenced gearing on the long Mistral Straight. Jean-Pierre Jabouille suffered an engine failure and oil fire, while Williams and Ligier showed that Renault’s straight-line speed did not guarantee the quickest lap.

Friday Qualifying

Jacques Laffite’s Friday lap secured pole ahead of Rene Arnoux. Didier Pironi and Alan Jones tried hard to dislodge the Renault on Saturday, but hotter, calmer conditions made improvement difficult. Rene Arnoux’s earlier time survived even though another engine failure stopped his challenge.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday brought further engine trouble for Renault and a major accident for Jan Lammers in Ensign’s newly completed car. Williams continued comparing its cars, while Jody Scheckter used Ferrari’s spare during an engine change. Ricardo Zunino and de Elio de Angelis also needed substantial mechanical attention before qualifying.

Saturday Qualifying

Didier Pironi equalled Rene Arnoux’s time but remained third, with Alan Jones fourth. Carlos Reutemann and Jean-Pierre Jabouille followed. Both Shadows and Jan Lammers failed to qualify, while Ferrari endured another difficult session with Gilles Villeneuve seventeenth and Jody Scheckter nineteenth.

Combined Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up

Renault investigated its repeated engine failures before Sunday’s warm-up. Fuel checks found no problem, and the team reduced boost for the race engines. The half-hour session ran shortly after midday, offering a final opportunity to establish whether those precautions would provide sufficient reliability.

What happened in the 1980 French Grand Prix?

Jacques Laffite led as Jean-Pierre Jabouille’s transmission failed at the start. Alan Jones worked past Didier Pironi and Rene Arnoux, then pursued the leading Ligier. Renault’s weekend remained difficult, with Rene Arnoux later hampered by throttle trouble.

Jacques Laffite’s tyres deteriorated and Alan Jones took the lead on lap 34. Didier Pironi also moved ahead of his team-mate and pursued the Williams, but could not overturn Alan Jones’s advantage. Nelson Piquet recovered fourth place for Brabham.

Alan Jones won by just over four seconds from Didier Pironi, with Jacques Laffite third. Nelson Piquet, Rene Arnoux and Carlos Reutemann completed the points. The result restored Alan Jones to the championship lead; his earlier Spanish victory did not count towards that total.

After the race, Alan Jones headed the drivers’ standings with 28 points, followed by Nelson Piquet on 25. Williams – Ford led the constructors’ table on 44, with Ligier – Ford on 39.
