Championship background

Alan Jones arrived at round 8 leading the 1980 F1 World Championship on 28 points, with Nelson Piquet on 25. Williams – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 44 points.

Race entries

Héctor Hector Rebaque replaced Ricardo Zunino at Brabham, while Shadow had withdrawn from Formula 1. RAM entered customer Williams cars for Rupert Keegan and Desiré Wilson. Emerson Fittipaldi introduced its new F8, adding another significant development to the European season.

Friday Free Practice

Cool conditions on Friday suited Goodyear’s runners better than the Michelin-equipped Ferrari and Renault cars. The new Emerson Fittipaldi lost time to mechanical trouble, Gilles Villeneuve needed the spare Ferrari and Didier Pironi went onto the grass after a puncture. Arrows briefly tried new skirted nose sections before removing them.

Friday Qualifying

Didier Pironi took pole ahead of Jacques Laffite, giving Ligier control of the front row. Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann filled the second row, with Nelson Piquet fifth. Bruno Giacomelli and Alain Prost also qualified strongly, placing sixth and seventh.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday remained dry but cold. Jody Scheckter suffered further engine trouble, while Ferrari struggled to find grip and balance. Derek Daly’s pace and track position frustrated the Ligier drivers, with contact from Didier Pironi sending the Tyrrell onto the grass. The fight for clear running was becoming increasingly tense.

Saturday Qualifying

The Michelin runners struggled in the cool conditions, leaving Renault and Ferrari well down the grid. Rupert Keegan qualified his private Williams ahead of both Ferraris. Wilson missed the cut on her only World Championship entry.

Combined Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up

With rain forecast, some teams practised wheel changes at the end of Sunday’s warm-up. Eddie Cheever stopped with engine trouble, forcing Osella to prepare its second car. Alan Jones chose his regular Williams after keeping the newer spare ready as an alternative.

What happened in the 1980 British Grand Prix?

Didier Pironi led comfortably until a deflating front tyre forced a lengthy stop. Jacques Laffite inherited the lead, but his own tyre failure sent him into the fencing at Hawthorn. Alan Jones took over, with Nelson Piquet and Carlos Reutemann following.

Didier Pironi charged back through the field and reached fifth before another tyre failure ended his recovery. Cracked wheel rims were subsequently identified as the cause of Ligier’s problems. Alan Jones maintained enough of an advantage to keep Nelson Piquet behind.

Alan Jones won by eleven seconds, with Carlos Reutemann close behind Nelson Piquet in third. Derek Daly, Jean-Pierre Jarier and Alain Prost took the remaining points. Alan Jones doubled his championship lead to six points, while Williams opened an eighteen-point advantage over Ligier.

After the race, Alan Jones headed the drivers’ standings with 37 points, followed by Nelson Piquet on 31. Williams – Ford led the constructors’ table on 57, with Ligier – Ford on 39.
