Championship background

Alan Jones arrived at round 10 leading the 1980 F1 World Championship on 41 points, with Nelson Piquet on 34. Williams – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 67 points.

Race entries

Lotus added Nigel Mansell alongside Mario Andretti and de Elio de Angelis. Alfa Romeo again fielded only Bruno Giacomelli, despite an initial entry for Vittorio Brambilla. Jochen Mass withdrew after a practice accident aggravated his neck and back, leaving 25 drivers to contest the 24 starting places.

Friday Free Practice

Friday morning was repeatedly interrupted. Mario Andretti stopped after running out of fuel, Nelson Piquet crashed at the Bosch curve and engine trouble affected Derek Daly and Jean-Pierre Jabouille. Alain Prost went off on oil, and Jochen Mass rolled while taking avoiding action. The session left several teams facing extensive rebuilding before qualifying.

Friday Qualifying

Rene Arnoux took a commanding pole ahead of Jean-Pierre Jabouille, with Renault enjoying a substantial advantage at altitude. Alan Jones was the only other driver to break the 1 minute 33 second mark, recovering from a brake failure in the spare Williams to qualify third in his regular car.

Saturday Free Practice

Jochen Mass tried the spare Arrows on Saturday but decided that his injuries made racing impossible. Didier Pironi and Eddie Cheever both needed engine changes, while Brabham completed its recovery from Nelson Piquet’s accident. Nigel Mansell continued to struggle with the experimental Lotus 81B as the team searched for a more competitive solution.

Saturday Qualifying

Carlos Reutemann and the two Ligiers followed. Nigel Mansell improved enough in a different Lotus to qualify 24th, leaving Jan Lammers outside the field. The margin between Renault and its rivals made tyre durability and reliability particularly important prospects for race day.

Combined Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up

Sunday’s warm-up was comparatively uneventful after the frantic preceding days. Humid conditions and the possibility of rain complicated the final preparations. The drivers settled their choice of cars before a two-hour interval in which the teams prepared for the scheduled afternoon start.

What happened in the 1980 Austrian Grand Prix?

Alan Jones made the best start and led until Rene Arnoux passed him on lap three. Renault established itself at the front, but Rene Arnoux later stopped for fresh tyres. Jean-Pierre Jabouille took over and attempted to preserve enough grip to reach the finish.

Alan Jones closed as Jean-Pierre Jabouille’s tyres deteriorated, setting up a tense final phase. Nigel Mansell’s debut ended with engine failure after he had endured fuel-soaked overalls and painful burns. Behind the leaders, Carlos Reutemann held third while Jacques Laffite and Nelson Piquet pursued the remaining points.

Jean-Pierre Jabouille held on by eight tenths of a second for his second and final Grand Prix victory. Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann completed the podium, followed by Jacques Laffite, Nelson Piquet and de Elio de Angelis. Alan Jones extended his championship lead to eleven points despite narrowly missing the win.

After the race, Alan Jones headed the drivers’ standings with 47 points, followed by Nelson Piquet on 36. Williams – Ford led the constructors’ table on 77, with Ligier – Ford on 51.
