Championship background

René Arnoux arrived at round 5 leading the 1980 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with Nelson Piquet on 18. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 18 points.

Race entries

Alain Prost returned to McLaren after recovering from his wrist injury. Tiff Needell made his Formula 1 debut with Ensign in place of the injured Clay Regazzoni, while Shadow introduced its DN12 for Geoff Lees. New tyre restrictions also came into effect, limiting the available choices and banning special qualifying rubber.

Friday Free Practice

Friday’s session began at 11:15 after the drivers waited for the promised medical helicopter. Teams examined brake cooling and larger front wheels, while several drivers tried spare cars. Eddie Cheever crashed near the end, damaging the Osella badly enough to miss the afternoon’s dry qualifying opportunity.

Friday Qualifying

Alan Jones took pole on Friday with a late lap in the spare Williams, which Carlos Reutemann had also needed after engine trouble. Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite qualified second and third, followed by Carlos Reutemann. The two Renaults completed the first six.

Saturday Free Practice

Heavy rain greeted the teams on Saturday. Jan Lammers ventured out first, followed gradually by the rest as the prospect of a wet race encouraged running. Goodyear’s new rain tyres gave the session particular value, allowing teams to assess their behaviour on the soaked circuit.

Saturday Qualifying

Saturday’s rain prevented any meaningful improvement. Eddie Cheever therefore had no chance to recover from missing Friday’s session, while both Shadows also failed to qualify. Tiff Needell secured the final starting position for his Grand Prix debut.

Combined Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up

Sunday was dry despite the forecast. Nelson Piquet compared his race car with a spare Brabham carrying different suspension settings, then chose his original machine. Mario Andretti stayed with the longer-wheelbase spare Lotus, while Alfa Romeo faced another late effort to prepare Patrick Depailler’s preferred car.

What happened in the 1980 Belgian Grand Prix?

Didier Pironi beat Alan Jones away and established control immediately. Alan Jones could not match the Ligier’s sustained pace, while Carlos Reutemann worked his way into third. The race gave Didier Pironi the opportunity to turn his promising early-season performances into a clear victory.

Behind the leading trio, Rene Arnoux maintained Renault’s championship challenge with fourth place. Jean-Pierre Jarier brought Tyrrell home fifth, and Gilles Villeneuve earned the final point for Ferrari. Several potential challengers fell away, leaving the front runners well separated by the finish.

Didier Pironi won by almost 48 seconds over Alan Jones, with Carlos Reutemann completing a productive day for Williams. Rene Arnoux retained the championship lead, but Alan Jones was now only two points behind. Didier Pironi’s first victory also brought him firmly into the leading group in the title contest.

After the race, René Arnoux headed the drivers’ standings with 21 points, followed by Alan Jones on 19. Williams – Ford led the constructors’ table on 25, with Ligier – Ford on 23.
