Championship background
Alain Prost arrived at round 10 leading the 1988 F1 World Championship on 60 points, with Ayrton Senna on 57. McLaren – Honda headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 117 points.
Race entries
Nigel Mansell raced despite illness, keeping the Williams line-up unchanged alongside Riccardo Patrese. The tight Hungaroring offered the naturally aspirated teams one of their strongest opportunities, and several arrived with good reason to aim high. Honda continued refining its turbo response, while Coloni introduced lighter bodywork for Gabriele Tarquini.
Pre-qualifying
Heavy rain made the opening-practice elimination particularly difficult. Nicola Larini was the driver to miss out in the Osella, while both EuroBruns, Alex Caffi and Gabriele Tarquini progressed. An interruption near the end left Nicola Larini frustrated that he had lost an opportunity to improve, but the result stood.

Friday Free Practice
Nigel Mansell was fastest in the wet Friday morning session, narrowly ahead of Alessandro Nannini. The rain interrupted preparations for a circuit already short of grip, and a late stoppage to recover Piercarlo Ghinzani’s car affected the pre-qualifying runners. Nigel Mansell’s speed was encouraging for Williams, although his illness made the prospect of a demanding full race much less straightforward.

Friday Qualifying
Alain Prost headed Friday qualifying, with Alessandro Nannini second and the naturally aspirated cars looking particularly competitive. The close corners reduced the value of outright turbo power, allowing Benetton, Williams and March to threaten the usual leading order. Yannick Dalmas’s accident added a substantial repair job to Larrousse’s weekend.

Saturday Free Practice
On Saturday morning Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell were separated by just 0.021 seconds. The drier conditions brought the lighter naturally aspirated cars firmly into contention, and Williams could attack the McLaren over a complete lap. Larrousse was recovering from Yannick Dalmas’s Friday accident after contact with Oscar Larrauri, leaving the Frenchman to prepare for final qualifying in the spare car.

Ayrton Senna improved to 1:27.635 on Saturday and beat Nigel Mansell by just 0.108 seconds. Thierry Boutsen, Ivan Capelli, Alessandro Nannini and Riccardo Patrese completed the next two rows, leaving Alain Prost seventh. Alex Caffi impressed in tenth for Dallara. Both Zakspeeds, Julian Bailey and Oscar Larrauri failed to qualify.

Sunday warm-up
Alain Prost found a more effective balance for Sunday’s warm-up and led the session in 1:30.198. That was a significant improvement in outlook after qualifying seventh with an uncooperative car. Nigel Mansell was second, but Alain Prost’s pace suggested he could join the leading fight if he found a way through the traffic. On a circuit with few easy passing opportunities, recovering those grid positions would be the central challenge.

What happened in the 1988 Hungarian Grand Prix?
Nigel Mansell challenged Ayrton Senna at the start, but the McLaren retained the lead. Riccardo Patrese moved into third, while Alain Prost initially slipped backwards. Nigel Mansell spun while following Ayrton Senna, leaving Riccardo Patrese to apply pressure before his own pace faded. Alain Prost worked steadily through the field and eventually reached second ahead of Thierry Boutsen.
On lap 49, Ayrton Senna encountered slower cars and Alain Prost seized his chance, sweeping past on the straight. He ran wide at the first corner, however, and Ayrton Senna immediately retook the lead. Alain Prost continued the pursuit despite a wheel-bearing vibration, turning what had looked like a difficult recovery drive into a direct fight for victory.
Ayrton Senna held on by little more than half a second. Thierry Boutsen finished third, followed by Gerhard Berger, Mauricio Gugelmin and Riccardo Patrese. Nigel Mansell retired exhausted before the finish. The result brought Ayrton Senna level with Alain Prost on points, with more wins to his name, and confirmed how rapidly the championship balance was shifting.
After the race, Ayrton Senna headed the drivers’ standings with 66 points, followed by Alain Prost on 66. McLaren – Honda led the constructors’ table on 132, with Ferrari on 44.
