Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 5 leading the 1988 F1 World Championship on 33 points, with Gerhard Berger on 18. McLaren – Honda headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 48 points.

Race entries

The same drivers arrived in Canada, but the setting had changed considerably since Formula 1’s previous visit. A new pit complex and relocated start-finish line altered the circuit, giving experienced drivers as well as newcomers something to learn. Williams also confirmed its Renault engine partnership for the following season, offering a longer-term lift during a difficult campaign.

Pre-qualifying

Stefano Modena led the five-car pre-qualifying group, followed by Andrea de Cesaris and Oscar Larrauri. Gabriele Tarquini secured the final place ahead of Alex Caffi, whose Dallara was troubled by its gearbox. With that first cut made during opening practice, the remaining 30 drivers could contest the 26 grid positions.

Friday Free Practice

Friday’s running began late as the organisers completed preparations around the new facilities. The relocated pits were a welcome improvement, but their entry and exit also demanded care from drivers learning the revised layout. Alain Prost adapted fastest, setting 1:24.046 and beating Gerhard Berger by nearly a second. For teams such as March, with little collective experience of Montréal, the opening laps were particularly valuable.

Friday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna took provisional pole on Friday in 1:22.392, just 0.107 seconds ahead of Alain Prost. Ferrari occupied the next two places, leaving the familiar leading teams at the front even on the revised circuit. Alessandro Nannini continued to demonstrate Benetton’s pace among the naturally aspirated cars.

Saturday Free Practice

Alain Prost lowered the benchmark again on Saturday morning, reaching 1:23.706 ahead of Ayrton Senna. Yannick Dalmas had a much more difficult preparation after an accident left Larrousse facing substantial repairs before final qualifying. The resulting loss of running would prove costly for his attempt to make the grid. The narrow margins around the barriers remained a recurring concern as the weekend gathered speed.

Sunday warm-up

Michele Alboreto topped the warm-up in 1:26.044, but Thierry Boutsen was only 0.187 seconds behind in the Benetton. That was encouraging for a car carrying a substantial race fuel load. Ferrari’s picture was more complicated: its speed had to be balanced against the turbo cars’ restricted fuel capacity. The warm-up therefore suggested a closer contest behind McLaren than the qualifying order alone might have implied.

What happened in the 1988 Canadian Grand Prix?

Alain Prost won the start and initially led Ayrton Senna, but this time the Brazilian found a way past. As the leaders encountered traffic on lap 19, Ayrton Senna attacked at the hairpin and took control. Alain Prost stayed close enough to keep the contest alive, although he could not reverse the move before the finish.

The fight behind them suffered a succession of retirements. Alessandro Nannini and Gerhard Berger dropped out, both Williams cars failed, and Michele Alboreto’s engine also gave way. Thierry Boutsen inherited third, while Philippe Streiff and de Andrea de Cesaris looked capable of taking valuable points for AGS and Rial before suspension failure and a late fuel shortage respectively ended those hopes.

Ayrton Senna won by 5.934 seconds from Alain Prost, with Thierry Boutsen third and Nelson Piquet fourth. Ivan Capelli and Jonathan Palmer took the remaining points, while Derek Warwick finished seventh after his bruising qualifying accident. Benetton’s podium was an important reward for the naturally aspirated camp, even as McLaren extended its perfect winning record for the season.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 39 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 24. McLaren – Honda led the constructors’ table on 63, with Ferrari on 27.
