Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 7 leading the 1988 F1 World Championship on 45 points, with Ayrton Senna on 33. McLaren – Honda headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 78 points.

Race entries

Ivan Capelli returned to action after the foot injury that had kept him out of the Detroit race, restoring March’s two-car line-up alongside Maurício Mauricio Gugelmin. Pierluigi Martini retained his Minardi seat after scoring on his comeback. Several teams brought developments, including revised damping for Lotus and cooling changes for Ligier.

Pre-qualifying

Stefano Modena was quickest among the pre-qualifying runners, narrowly ahead of Alex Caffi and Andrea de Cesaris. Oscar Larrauri also progressed, while engine problems left Gabriele Tarquini and Coloni outside the main qualifying field. Oscar Larrauri would later need another reprieve to make the race itself.

Friday Free Practice

Alain Prost opened his home weekend strongly with 1:08.866 on Friday morning, more than seven tenths ahead of Ayrton Senna. Lotus was assessing revised damping, while Ligier’s cooling changes addressed its troublesome Judd installation. The fast, abrasive circuit put a premium on a car that remained balanced through the long corners, and Alain Prost immediately looked comfortable in the McLaren.

Friday Qualifying

Alain Prost headed Friday qualifying in 1:08.171, with Ayrton Senna second. It was the first firm indication that the Brazilian’s run of six consecutive poles might end. Gerhard Berger remained Ferrari’s leading challenger, while the naturally aspirated cars were fighting for positions behind the turbo-powered leaders.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday morning brought contrasting fortunes. Ayrton Senna narrowly edged Alain Prost at the front, but March was desperately short of usable cars and engines, leaving its mechanics with extensive rebuilding work. Thierry Boutsen also suffered unexplained engine cut-outs during Benetton’s preparations. Both teams had to recover lost running before the qualifying hour, making their afternoon more about restoring a workable baseline than simply fine-tuning it.

Sunday warm-up

Ayrton Senna topped the warm-up in 1:10.135, ahead of Alain Prost. Ferrari’s final preparations underlined the difficulty of converting its qualifying speed into a full-race challenge: fuel consumption and tyre wear remained concerns. The McLarens could therefore approach the start as favourites, but their own fuel management would still be important if the drivers pushed each other hard over the complete distance.

What happened in the 1988 French Grand Prix?

Alain Prost led from the start, with Ayrton Senna following closely enough to keep the pressure on. The pair pulled away from the Ferraris while managing their fuel use. Ayrton Senna stopped first for tyres; Alain Prost’s subsequent stop was delayed by a stubborn wheel, handing the lead to the Brazilian.

Alain Prost closed again as Ayrton Senna struggled with his gearbox. On lap 61, traffic presented the opening, and Alain Prost reclaimed the lead through the fast Signes section. Ayrton Senna’s mechanical difficulties worsened, leaving him unable to respond. Nigel Mansell’s miserable finishing record continued when his Williams retired, while Michele Alboreto emerged ahead of Gerhard Berger in the Ferrari contest.

Alain Prost won by 31.752 seconds, with Ayrton Senna second and Michele Alboreto third. Gerhard Berger, Nelson Piquet and Alessandro Nannini completed the points. Pole, victory and fastest lap made it an emphatic home performance for Alain Prost, and the decisive pass ensured that this McLaren one-two had contained a real contest for the win.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 54 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 39. McLaren – Honda led the constructors’ table on 93, with Ferrari on 34.
