Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 14 leading the 1988 F1 World Championship on 81 points, with Ayrton Senna on 76. McLaren – Honda headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 157 points.

Race entries

The drivers remained unchanged from Portugal. Benetton announced Johnny Herbert as Thierry Boutsen’s replacement for the following season, but the immediate contest centred on whether the naturally aspirated cars could exploit Jerez’s tight layout. Goodyear’s revised rear tyres gave the teams another variable to understand during practice.

Pre-qualifying

Gabriele Tarquini was eliminated after a series of problems during Friday morning’s running. Both EuroBruns advanced on this occasion, alongside Alex Caffi and Nicola Larini. The Coloni’s absence reduced the field to 30 before the main qualifying sessions.

Friday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell made an emphatic start with 1:24.722 on Friday morning, almost a second and a half ahead of Riccardo Patrese in the other Williams. The combination of a clear lap and a well-suited car helped him make the most of the circuit’s narrow clean line. McLaren still had setup work to do, while several teams struggled to understand the revised rear tyres and generate the grip they needed.

Friday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna headed Friday qualifying, while Thierry Boutsen’s times were disallowed for a front-wing endplate infringement. Nigel Mansell therefore ended the day second in the valid order. Benetton needed Saturday to recover its position, and the detailed session tables preserve that distinction rather than carrying the deleted time into the combined result.

Saturday Free Practice

Ayrton Senna moved ahead on Saturday morning, but Nigel Mansell remained only 0.211 seconds behind. As the leading teams refined their setups and found cleaner laps, the extraordinary Friday gap narrowed into a genuine contest. The lower-powered cars were still competitive here, where smooth response and cornering grip could offset the turbos’ straight-line advantage. Nigel Mansell’s early promise was therefore more than a one-session curiosity.

Saturday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna secured pole in 1:24.067, only 0.067 seconds ahead of Alain Prost. Nigel Mansell was third, followed by Thierry Boutsen and Alessandro Nannini. Riccardo Patrese was fined after retaliatory driving caused a collision with Julian Bailey. Julian Bailey, Oscar Larrauri and both Zakspeeds failed to qualify.

Sunday warm-up

Nigel Mansell led the warm-up too, with Thierry Boutsen second. The naturally aspirated cars had encouraging race pace, but tyre wear remained a concern, while the turbo runners had to watch fuel consumption. Wind across the circuit added another complication to an already delicate search for grip. The session reinforced the prospect of a close race rather than another comfortable McLaren procession.

What happened in the 1988 Spanish Grand Prix?

Alain Prost took the lead at the start, and Nigel Mansell followed him past Ayrton Senna. The Williams stayed close through the first part of the race, while Ayrton Senna had to defend against a group of naturally aspirated rivals. Ivan Capelli worked his way past Riccardo Patrese and Ayrton Senna before engine failure ended another strong March performance.

Alessandro Nannini used fresh tyres to move into third, while Nigel Mansell’s own stop was delayed by a wheel nut. Alain Prost could then make his stop without surrendering the lead. Ayrton Senna lost ground during the pit-stop sequence but recovered to fourth, still troubled by uncertainty over his fuel reading.

Alain Prost finished 26.241 seconds ahead of Nigel Mansell, with Alessandro Nannini third. Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger completed the points behind Ayrton Senna. It was Alain Prost’s second consecutive victory, keeping the championship alive for Japan, while Nigel Mansell’s second finish of the season again brought him second place.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 84 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 79. McLaren – Honda led the constructors’ table on 169, with Ferrari on 62.
