Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 3 leading the 1988 F1 World Championship on 15 points, with Ayrton Senna on 9. McLaren – Honda headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 24 points.

Race entries

Nicola Larini returned with an Osella revised after its exclusion at Imola. Honda supplied different engine developments for its McLaren and Lotus drivers to assess, while Tyrrell brought suspension changes to help its cars around the tight streets. The entry again stood at 31 cars, leaving one elimination before main qualifying.

Pre-qualifying

The pre-qualifying contest took place during Thursday morning’s practice. Stefano Modena was excluded after missing a mandatory weighing check, so the other contenders survived the initial cut. It was a costly administrative error for the EuroBrun driver on a circuit where keeping the car intact was already difficult enough.

Thursday Free Practice

Rain made Thursday morning treacherous and interrupted the usual process of cleaning up the street circuit. Gerhard Berger set the fastest time before his Ferrari stopped in the tunnel; Andrea de Cesaris then struck the stranded car. Gabriele Tarquini and Alex Caffi also damaged their cars against the barriers. Derek Warwick was second in the session, ahead of Ayrton Senna, but the accidents made survival as important as speed for several smaller teams.

Thursday Qualifying

Ayrton Senna was already in a class of his own during Thursday qualifying, setting 1:26.464 as the surface improved. Alain Prost followed in 1:28.375, only just ahead of Nigel Mansell. The weather left plenty of scope for Saturday improvements, but the gap between the McLaren drivers was striking even before the decisive session.

Saturday Free Practice

Saturday brought a much better opportunity to work in dry conditions. Ayrton Senna led with 1:25.385, almost a second ahead of Alain Prost, while Nigel Mansell put the Williams third. Honda’s engine experiments were part of the weekend’s setup work: Alain Prost returned to the earlier specification after trying the revised version. The clearer conditions let the drivers approach qualifying with a more representative feel for grip than Thursday’s rain had allowed.

Sunday warm-up

Rain returned for Sunday’s warm-up, limiting its value for the dry race that followed. Ayrton Senna was quickest again, with Alain Prost and Derek Warwick close behind, but the teams had to make their final decisions without a normal dry race-morning rehearsal. Williams also worked on its cooling arrangements after the overheating difficulties that had troubled the opening races. Keeping the car healthy in traffic would be especially important here.

What happened in the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix?

Ayrton Senna escaped at the start while Gerhard Berger slipped ahead of Alain Prost, leaving the second McLaren trapped behind the Ferrari. The opening lap brought trouble for several others, including Alex Caffi and Nelson Piquet. Nigel Mansell’s attempt to keep the leading cars in sight ended after contact with Michele Alboreto, while Ayrton Senna steadily built an enormous advantage.

Alain Prost finally passed Gerhard Berger on lap 54, but the leader was far up the road. McLaren asked its drivers to ease their pace. Then, on lap 67, Ayrton Senna hit the barrier at Portier and retired. An afternoon that had appeared firmly under his control suddenly belonged to his team-mate.

Alain Prost took the win ahead of Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto. Derek Warwick brought Arrows home fourth, Jonathan Palmer earned fifth for Tyrrell, and Riccardo Patrese recovered to sixth after an earlier collision and pit stop. Ayrton Senna’s qualifying brilliance remained one of the weekend’s defining memories, but Alain Prost left with the nine points that mattered for the championship.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 24 points, followed by Gerhard Berger on 14. McLaren – Honda led the constructors’ table on 33, with Ferrari on 20.
