Championship background
Didier Pironi arrived at round 12 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 39 points, with John Watson on 30. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 54 points.
Race entries
Nigel Mansell returned to Lotus, while Tommy Byrne made his first Grand Prix appearance with Theodore. Rupert Keegan replaced Jochen Mass at March after Jochen Mass found himself unfit to continue following his French accident. Hockenheim also featured a new chicane near the Ostkurve.
Friday Free Practice
Friday morning stopped when Tommy Byrne crashed his Theodore, although he was unhurt and continued in the spare car. Alain Prost abandoned an experiment with carbon brakes, Rene Arnoux struggled with fuel injection and Teo Fabi lost running to an oil leak and fire. Ferrari also continued evaluating its alternative gearbox layout.
Friday Qualifying
Didier Pironi’s Friday lap secured pole by a substantial margin. Alain Prost was second, followed by Rene Arnoux, Nelson Piquet, Patrick Tambay and Riccardo Patrese. Turbocharged cars dominated, with Michele Alboreto the fastest normally aspirated runner. Niki Lauda injured his wrist in a Friday qualifying accident.
Saturday Free Practice
Heavy rain made Saturday morning extremely hazardous. In poor visibility, Didier Pironi struck the back of Alain Prost’s Renault and suffered devastating leg injuries as his Ferrari became airborne and crashed. Practice stopped for the rescue operation, and the meeting continued under a profound sense of shock.
Saturday Qualifying
Saturday’s rain prevented improvements, leaving Friday’s times to determine the grid. Niki Lauda withdrew, admitting Marc Surer, but Ferrari did not formally withdraw Didier Pironi, so pole position remained vacant. Patrick Tambay would carry the team’s hopes alone when the race began.
Combined Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up
A support-race accident delayed Sunday’s warm-up. Marc Surer suffered an engine failure and John Watson crashed, creating urgent repair work; the teams agreed they could still meet the planned race start. Nelson Piquet was particularly quick with his lighter fuel load, while Ferrari prepared its spare car for Patrick Tambay if needed.
What happened in the 1982 German Grand Prix?
Nelson Piquet took the lead and built an advantage with Brabham’s planned fuel stop in mind. Before reaching that stop, he collided with Eliseo Salazar while lapping the ATS at the new chicane. Both retired, and Nelson Piquet confronted Eliseo Salazar beside the track in an angry outburst.
Patrick Tambay inherited the lead and kept Rene Arnoux behind him, managing the Ferrari carefully. John Watson appeared set for third before a suspension failure put him out. Keke Rosberg moved into the podium position, with Michele Alboreto following in the Tyrrell.
Patrick Tambay won ahead of Rene Arnoux and Keke Rosberg, while Michele Alboreto, Bruno Giacomelli and Marc Surer completed the points. It was a composed first victory in difficult circumstances for Ferrari. Didier Pironi remained championship leader, but his injuries meant he would take no further part in the season.
After the race, Didier Pironi headed the drivers’ standings with 39 points, followed by John Watson on 30. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 61, with McLaren – Ford on 54.
