Nelson Piquet took BMW’s first Formula 1 victory in Canada, leading Brabham team-mate Riccardo Patrese home. The result was overshadowed by the death of Riccardo Paletti, whose Osella struck Didier Pironi’s stalled Ferrari at the original start.

Championship background
John Watson arrived at round 8 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 26 points, with Didier Pironi on 20. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 38 points.
Race entries
Geoff Lees replaced the injured Jan Lammers at Theodore, while Toleman again missed the meeting. Brabham retained its split engine approach, with Nelson Piquet in the BMW-powered car and Riccardo Patrese using Cosworth power. The Montreal circuit had been renamed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in tribute to the Canadian driver.
Friday Free Practice
Rain replaced the preceding heatwave on Friday, frustrating the teams’ efforts to settle their cars for Montreal. Rene Arnoux and Manfred Winkelhock collided, creating more repair work for ATS after its difficult Detroit weekend. The wet surface gave little opportunity to evaluate the circuit in representative race conditions.
Friday Qualifying
Friday’s drizzle spread across the circuit, leaving Keke Rosberg and de Andrea de Cesaris well ahead in the wet session. Manfred Winkelhock could not run after the morning’s collision, and Rene Arnoux used the spare Renault. The times were unlikely to determine the grid if Saturday brought better weather.
Saturday Free Practice
Saturday was dry and increasingly hot. Both Williams cars suffered engine failures, and de Andrea de Cesaris crashed after a tyre deflated. Teams added cooling ducts and worked to manage tyre temperatures. Nelson Piquet enjoyed a much more productive day than in Detroit, with Brabham’s BMW-powered cars now running competitively.
Saturday Qualifying
Didier Pironi took pole on Saturday with a 1:27.509, ahead of Rene Arnoux, Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet. John Watson was the fastest Cosworth qualifier in sixth behind Bruno Giacomelli. Manfred Winkelhock’s repairs came too late for a successful attempt, and he failed to qualify alongside de Villota and Chico Serra.
Combined Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up
The 13:15 warm-up brought further trouble: Bruno Giacomelli stopped with an electrical fault, Brian Henton broke a gearbox and Roberto Guerrero lost a driveshaft. Keke Rosberg was unhappy with his car and chose the spare Williams. With the scheduled start not until 16:15, the mechanics had time for repairs before the afternoon’s tragic events.
What happened in the 1982 Canadian Grand Prix?
Didier Pironi stalled as the original start approached, and the field swerved around the stationary Ferrari. Riccardo Paletti struck it at high speed and sustained fatal injuries. The race was stopped while the emergency crews worked, and Osella withdrew its remaining entry.
After a lengthy delay, the race restarted with a reduced field. Nelson Piquet took control in the BMW-powered Brabham, while Riccardo Patrese’s older Cosworth car worked into second. Didier Pironi continued in the spare Ferrari but lost substantial time and could no longer challenge for victory.
Nelson Piquet won ahead of Riccardo Patrese and John Watson, with de Elio de Angelis, Marc Surer and de Andrea de Cesaris completing the points. The first BMW-powered victory was a significant technical milestone, but the loss of Riccardo Paletti left the meeting with a far more lasting sadness.
After the race, John Watson headed the drivers’ standings with 30 points, followed by Didier Pironi on 20. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 42, with Ferrari on 26.
