René Rene Arnoux won at Monza ahead of Ferrari’s Patrick Tambay and returning former champion Mario Andretti. Mario Andretti had delighted the home crowd by taking pole, while John Watson kept his title hopes alive with fourth place. Keke Rosberg’s rear-wing trouble left the championship undecided.

Championship background
Keke Rosberg arrived at round 15 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 42 points, with Didier Pironi on 39. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 64 points.
Race entries
Mario Andretti returned to Ferrari alongside Patrick Tambay, restoring the team to two cars. Toleman introduced the TG183 for Derek Warwick, and Alfa Romeo brought its new turbocharged V8 for a practice appearance. March switched to Michelin tyres, while Tyrrell arrived in a new green livery.
Friday Free Practice
Friday morning gave Mario Andretti time to settle into the Ferrari, but several other teams struggled. Eddie Cheever stopped with transmission trouble, Derek Warwick’s new Toleman suffered a seized rear damper amid tyre difficulties, and Eliseo Salazar crashed after severe bouncing. Williams also experimented with a radio link in Keke Rosberg’s spare car.
Friday Qualifying
Patrick Tambay headed Friday’s session, narrowly ahead of Nelson Piquet. The Ferrari and Brabham drivers exploited their power advantage, while Renault devoted attention to race settings. De Elio de Angelis’s Friday accident added to Lotus’s difficult weekend.
Saturday Free Practice
Saturday brought a brief run for Alfa Romeo’s turbo car before a problem with its sidepods stopped the test. Rene Arnoux and de Elio de Angelis collided under braking, damaging both cars, while Nigel Mansell crashed separately. The mechanics faced considerable work before the final qualifying hour.
Saturday Qualifying
Saturday produced a memorable contest: Nelson Piquet bettered Patrick Tambay, only for Mario Andretti to beat them both with his final tyre set. Mario Andretti took pole ahead of Nelson Piquet and Patrick Tambay. Jacques Laffite’s Saturday time was removed after his Ligier was found underweight, leaving him dependent on Friday’s lap.
Combined Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up
Sunday’s 12:30 warm-up disrupted Ferrari and Brabham’s plans. Patrick Tambay’s car stopped on the circuit, prompting preparations for the spare, while Nelson Piquet reported concern over his engine. With the race scheduled for 15:30, the teams had time to respond, but the final preparations were far from relaxed.
What happened in the 1982 Italian Grand Prix?
Rene Arnoux made an excellent start and established himself at the front. Both Brabhams ran strongly before mechanical problems removed them, continuing a season in which their speed repeatedly exceeded their reliability. Ferrari’s two drivers became Renault’s leading pursuers.
Patrick Tambay took second and Mario Andretti held third, giving the home crowd two cars on the podium. Keke Rosberg lost time when his rear wing failed and required replacement. Alain Prost and Niki Lauda retired, ending their mathematical chances of winning the drivers’ title.
Rene Arnoux won ahead of Patrick Tambay and Mario Andretti, with John Watson fourth, Michele Alboreto fifth and Eddie Cheever sixth. John Watson remained nine points behind Keke Rosberg, leaving him a narrow route to the championship at the final race. Ferrari also strengthened its position in the constructors’ contest.
After the race, Keke Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 42 points, followed by Didier Pironi on 39. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 74, with McLaren – Ford on 63.
