Ferrari finished first and second at Imola, but the San Marino Grand Prix ended in bitter disagreement between Didier Pironi and Gilles Villeneuve. Didier Pironi’s late pass secured victory after both Renaults retired, while Michele Alboreto completed the podium in a race reduced to 14 entries by a team boycott.

Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 4 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with Niki Lauda on 12. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 22 points.

Race entries

Most FOCA teams stayed away following the decision against the underweight cars in Brazil. Ferrari, Renault, Alfa Romeo, Toleman, Tyrrell, ATS and Osella contested the meeting. Tyrrell replaced Slim Borgudd with Brian Henton, and the small field meant pre-qualifying was unnecessary.

Friday Free Practice

Friday’s cool breeze suited the turbo cars, and Ferrari and Renault quickly established themselves as the main contenders. Teo Fabi’s Toleman suffered an engine failure, creating a rush to complete repairs. With everyone assured a grid place, the sessions were about preparation and starting order rather than survival at the qualification cut-off.

Friday Qualifying

Alain Prost set Friday’s fastest time despite Renault’s engine problems, with both drivers having to share the spare. Didier Pironi escaped injury when a tyre failure sent his Ferrari into the barriers. The disruption left the leading teams with substantial overnight work despite the reduced field.

Saturday Free Practice

Ferrari was still building up a replacement car for Didier Pironi on Saturday, leaving him in the spare during morning practice. Gilles Villeneuve returned with smoke and flames around his front brake ducts after sustained heavy braking. The incident highlighted Imola’s demands, while ATS briefly experimented with different tyre makes front and rear before abandoning the idea.

Saturday Qualifying

Rene Arnoux delivered a 1:29.765 on Saturday to take pole ahead of Alain Prost, with Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi on the second row. Michele Alboreto qualified ahead of the Alfa Romeos, while Derek Warwick and Teo Fabi gave Toleman more encouraging running. The small entry removed the usual threat of failing to qualify, but the battle at the front remained intense.

Combined Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up

The warm-up ran largely smoothly, but Renault decided Rene Arnoux’s engine needed replacing afterwards. The mechanics completed the change in about an hour, leaving no opportunity for a proper test before the start. Derek Warwick also suffered an electrical problem during the morning, a warning that would return at the worst possible moment.

What happened in the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix?

Derek Warwick’s Toleman stopped before the start, and the race soon centred on Rene Arnoux and the two Ferraris. Alain Prost retired early, leaving Rene Arnoux to resist repeated attacks from Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi. The lead changed as the trio fought closely before the Renault’s engine failed.

Ferrari now had control, and the team displayed a slow signal. Gilles Villeneuve understood that the existing order should be preserved, but Didier Pironi continued racing and passed him on the final lap. The Canadian believed the agreement between them had been broken, turning a team one-two into a deeply unhappy result.

Didier Pironi won ahead of Gilles Villeneuve and Michele Alboreto, with Jean-Pierre Jarier fourth and Eliseo Salazar fifth. Manfred Winkelhock was disqualified for an underweight ATS, while Teo Fabi had completed too little distance to be classified and inherit sixth. Ferrari’s victory would be remembered above all for the rupture between its drivers.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 18 points, followed by Niki Lauda on 12. Renault led the constructors’ table on 22, with McLaren – Ford on 20.
