Alain Prost produced a remarkable recovery to win the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, overcoming a puncture that had dropped him a lap behind. Carlos Reutemann finished second ahead of René Rene Arnoux, while Niki Lauda marked his return to Formula 1 with fourth place after a weekend dominated initially by a drivers’ strike.

All times are local. The race time is the scheduled start; weather delays and interruptions are described below.

Championship background

The 1982 F1 World Championship opened amid a dispute over new superlicence conditions. Led by Niki Lauda and Didier Pironi, the drivers opposed provisions that restricted their freedom to move between teams. A compromise allowed the race to proceed, but the strike cost the meeting its entire first day of scheduled running.

Race entries

Niki Lauda returned with McLaren after two seasons away, Keke Rosberg replaced Alan Jones at Williams, and Riccardo Patrese joined reigning champion Nelson Piquet at Brabham. Brian Henton took over the Arrows intended for Patrick Tambay, who withdrew after the strike; Marc Surer was injured. Ensign withdrew Roberto Guerrero, while newcomers included Teo Fabi, Riccardo Paletti, Mauro Baldi and Raul Boesel.

Thursday Free Practice

Thursday’s scheduled practice did not take place because the drivers remained on strike. The cancellation also prevented the intended pre-qualifying process, which would have reduced the field for the main sessions. Roberto Guerrero’s subsequent withdrawal brought the entry down to the permitted number, leaving the teams to prepare for a compressed Friday programme.

Thursday Qualifying

Thursday qualifying was cancelled with the rest of the day’s running. There was therefore no opening benchmark to fall back on: Friday’s remaining session would decide the entire grid. The cancellation also increased the cost of mechanical trouble during the shortened meeting.

Friday Free Practice

Friday practice began at 11:00 after further negotiations. Brabham initially kept Nelson Piquet out of the car, leaving Riccardo Patrese to do its running, while Alain Prost spun into the catch fencing after a tyre deflated. His Renault was repaired, but the interruption was costly with only one qualifying hour now available. The turbo cars were clearly strongest on Kyalami’s fast, high-altitude layout.

Friday Qualifying

Rene Arnoux secured pole in Friday’s session, with Nelson Piquet second on Brabham-BMW’s championship debut. Gilles Villeneuve, Riccardo Patrese, Alain Prost and Didier Pironi completed a turbo-powered top six. Rain arrived during the hour and prevented late improvements. Both Arrows drivers failed to qualify, as did Riccardo Paletti and Teo Fabi, while the expanded 26-car grid admitted Jean-Pierre Jarier and Chico Serra at the back.

Combined Qualifying Classification

The sole qualifying session determined the grid after the first session was cancelled.

Saturday warm-up

Saturday’s warm-up prompted several final changes. Michele Alboreto chose the spare Tyrrell, Nigel Mansell’s Lotus developed an electrical fault, and Derek Warwick needed brake components transferred from Teo Fabi’s Toleman. Ferrari adjusted its boost settings as it balanced pace against reliability. The curtailed practice programme had made these last checks particularly valuable.

What happened in the 1982 South African Grand Prix?

The Renaults quickly established control, with Alain Prost passing Rene Arnoux for the lead as the race developed. Their opposition faded through mechanical trouble and mistakes, including Nelson Piquet’s early excursion. Alain Prost then suffered a left-rear puncture and had to limp back for replacement tyres, rejoining a lap behind his team-mate.

Fresh tyres transformed the chase. Alain Prost unlapped himself and worked back through the leading runners, while Rene Arnoux struggled with tyre vibration. Didier Pironi also recovered after a stop but later lost performance, leaving Carlos Reutemann’s consistent Williams drive increasingly valuable.

Alain Prost regained the lead and completed an exceptional victory. Carlos Reutemann passed the troubled Rene Arnoux for second, while Niki Lauda finished his comeback race strongly in fourth ahead of Keke Rosberg and John Watson. The result gave Renault the ideal championship start, even if the route to it had been anything but straightforward.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 9 points, followed by Carlos Reutemann on 6. Renault led the constructors’ table on 13, with Williams – Ford on 8.
