The Brazilian Grand Prix delivered a fierce contest in punishing heat, but its final result was decided away from the track. Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg finished first and second on the road before both were disqualified for underweight cars, handing victory to Alain Prost ahead of John Watson and Nigel Mansell.

Championship background

Alain Prost arrived at round 2 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 9 points, with Carlos Reutemann on 6. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 13 points.

Race entries

Brabham reverted to Cosworth power with its new BT49D rather than using the BMW turbo car. Alfa Romeo introduced the 182 and Lotus the 91, while Roberto Guerrero returned with Ensign after missing the opener. Carlos Reutemann continued alongside Keke Rosberg at Williams in what would prove to be his final Grand Prix.

Pre-qualifying

Five drivers contested the preliminary session, with four progressing. Raul Boesel was fastest for March, followed by Jean-Pierre Jarier and the two Tolemans. Riccardo Paletti was eliminated in the second Osella, leaving the remaining entrants to fight for the 26 places on the race grid.

Friday Free Practice

Friday’s humidity and the bumpy surface made the ground-effect cars physically demanding to drive. Teams used neck supports and cockpit ventilation to help the drivers cope, but the rigid suspension offered little relief. The opening running also introduced several new chassis, making balance and reliability as important as speed before the short qualifying-tyre opportunities.

Friday Qualifying

Alain Prost set the decisive 1:28.808 on Friday, putting Renault in a strong position. Only two sets of qualifying tyres were available per driver, making a clear lap essential. The heat and traffic left several drivers feeling that their potential had not been fully expressed.

Saturday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell spent part of Saturday morning in the older Lotus spare while his new car received transmission repairs. Rene Arnoux’s preparation was also disrupted by excursions, including one after a rear-wing support failure. The combination of heat, bumps and very stiff cars left little room for error, especially for teams still sorting new machinery.

Saturday Qualifying

Gilles Villeneuve improved on Saturday to take second, ahead of Keke Rosberg and Rene Arnoux. Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann completed the third row, while Nelson Piquet was only seventh after struggling to find a clear lap. Roberto Guerrero, Teo Fabi, Brian Henton and Derek Warwick failed to qualify, joining pre-qualifying casualty Riccardo Paletti on the sidelines.

Combined Qualifying Classification

Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up

Race-day preparations centred on surviving a long, hot afternoon without sacrificing too much pace. Ferrari favoured a harder tyre approach than several rivals, while the lightweight Cosworth cars promised a strong challenge. The final running led into a race in which physical endurance would prove just as significant as mechanical reliability.

What happened in the 1982 Brazilian Grand Prix?

Gilles Villeneuve led the opening stages, but Nelson Piquet worked through the leading group and the battle intensified as the heat took its toll. The Ferrari eventually went off, leaving Nelson Piquet to fight for a home victory. Riccardo Patrese became so exhausted that he had to retire, illustrating the physical severity of the race.

Nelson Piquet reached the finish ahead of Keke Rosberg and Alain Prost, then collapsed from exhaustion during the podium celebrations. The result remained under protest because the Brabham and Williams had used replenishable water tanks associated with brake cooling. Their cars were subsequently excluded for running under the minimum weight.

Alain Prost therefore received the victory, with John Watson second and Nigel Mansell third. Michele Alboreto, Manfred Winkelhock and Didier Pironi completed the revised points places. The dispute deepened the division between the governing body and several teams, with consequences that would soon be felt at Imola.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 18 points, followed by John Watson on 7. Renault led the constructors’ table on 22, with McLaren – Ford on 10.
