The Belgian Grand Prix was overshadowed by the death of Gilles Villeneuve after a qualifying accident at Circuit Zolder. Ferrari withdrew from the meeting, and John Watson went on to win the race after passing Keke Rosberg near the finish. Eddie Cheever ultimately received third place following Niki Lauda’s disqualification.

Championship background
Alain Prost arrived at round 5 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with Niki Lauda on 12. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 22 points.
Race entries
The teams that had boycotted Imola returned, with Derek Daly joining Williams alongside Keke Rosberg. Marc Surer was back at Arrows after recovering from injury, Jan Lammers took over the Theodore, and Emilio de Villota added a third March. Williams introduced the FW08, while Brabham returned to BMW turbo power.
Pre-qualifying
Six drivers had their times assessed during Friday morning’s practice, with four allowed through. Raul Boesel, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Derek Warwick and Teo Fabi progressed. Riccardo Paletti and de Villota were eliminated, reducing the field to 30 for the main qualifying sessions.

Friday Free Practice
Friday practice began 21 minutes late while the medical arrangements were completed. Keke Rosberg quickly showed the new Williams’s promise despite brake concerns, while Alain Prost changed cars because of overheating. Brabham struggled with uneven engine response, and Ferrari searched for better traction. The rebuilt pits improved working conditions, but the technical workload remained considerable.
Friday Qualifying
Rene Arnoux narrowly headed Alain Prost on Friday as Renault established a clear advantage. Nelson Piquet was third, while Michele Alboreto impressed as the fastest Cosworth runner. Brian Henton’s time was subsequently removed after his Tyrrell was found underweight, leaving him dependent on Saturday’s session.
Saturday Free Practice
Saturday morning was cold with lingering damp patches. Bruno Giacomelli stopped early with back pain, Riccardo Patrese suffered an engine failure and Manfred Winkelhock managed little running before trouble intervened. Several drivers completed substantial mileage as they refined their settings, with brake cooling particularly important at Zolder.
Saturday Qualifying
Alain Prost took pole ahead of Rene Arnoux and Keke Rosberg, but the sporting outcome became secondary when Gilles Villeneuve collided with Jochen Mass’s slower March and suffered fatal injuries. Ferrari withdrew both entries. The remaining grid closed up, allowing Jochen Mass and Mauro Baldi into the race; Roberto Guerrero and Jan Lammers did not qualify.
Combined Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up
Sunday’s warm-up took place in subdued circumstances after Gilles Villeneuve’s death. Keke Rosberg developed a high-speed misfire that prompted an engine change, while Renault replaced Alain Prost’s turbochargers after a failure. Eddie Cheever escaped damage after a spin into a run-off area. Ferrari’s empty place in the paddock remained a sombre reminder of the previous afternoon.
What happened in the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix?
The Renaults began at the front, but the race developed into a contest between Keke Rosberg’s Williams and the McLarens. Keke Rosberg worked towards what would have been his first victory, while John Watson preserved his challenge through the changing order.
As Keke Rosberg’s tyres deteriorated late in the race, John Watson closed rapidly. He took the lead on the penultimate lap and held it to the finish, leaving the Williams driver second after another strong performance. Niki Lauda crossed the line third but his McLaren failed the post-race weight check.
Eddie Cheever was promoted to third, with de Elio de Angelis, Nelson Piquet and Chico Serra completing the points. Chico Serra’s sixth became his only championship point and Fittipaldi’s last. The results could not lift the loss hanging over the meeting, which remained defined by Gilles Villeneuve’s fatal accident.
After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 18 points, followed by John Watson on 17. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 29, with Renault on 22.
