Championship background
Alain Prost arrived at round 7 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with John Watson on 17. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 29 points.
Race entries
Toleman withdrew both cars after transport problems disrupted its preparations. Ferrari again entered Didier Pironi alone, while Brabham continued with BMW power for Nelson Piquet and Cosworth power for Riccardo Patrese. The new Detroit Street Circuit gave the entire field an unfamiliar and exceptionally bumpy challenge.
Thursday familiarisation
The additional Thursday familiarisation session was cancelled because the circuit’s barriers and escape roads were not ready. Further safety work continued into Friday, postponing both the scheduled morning practice and afternoon qualifying. The teams eventually received one hour of free running late on Friday.
Friday Free Practice
Friday’s delayed practice began at 16:00 and was repeatedly interrupted. Rene Arnoux damaged his Renault against a wall, while Jan Lammers crashed and broke his thumb. Jean-Pierre Jarier also suffered suspension damage. The session eventually ended at 17:25, leaving everyone short of experience before qualifying on a circuit full of bumps, surface changes and tight escape roads.
Saturday morning Qualifying
Alain Prost took the advantage in Saturday morning’s dry session, ahead of de Andrea de Cesaris and Keke Rosberg. John Watson collided with Chico Serra, interrupting his preparation, while Nelson Piquet suffered engine trouble in both available Brabhams. Manfred Winkelhock made excellent use of the opportunity to qualify fifth for ATS.
Saturday afternoon Qualifying
Rain arrived before the afternoon session and prevented any improvement on the dry times. Alain Prost retained pole, but Nelson Piquet was left outside the grid, along with de Villota. Niki Lauda was fastest in the wet running, while de Andrea de Cesaris crashed in the tunnel. The unusual Saturday double session had produced a major upset before the race even began.
Combined Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up
Sunday’s warm-up took place in sunshine after Saturday’s rain. Williams and Brabham reverted from their experimental carbon brakes, while Didier Pironi used Ferrari’s revised front-suspension arrangement. The teams finally had another dry opportunity to prepare, although the difficult surface and limited earlier mileage left considerable uncertainty for the race. Jean-Pierre Jarier suffered a fuel-line fire and Riccardo Paletti crashed, leaving Osella with two damaged cars and only one spare.
What happened in the 1982 Detroit Grand Prix?
Alain Prost led initially before a collision involving Roberto Guerrero and Riccardo Patrese prompted a red flag. The race restarted with 18 cars, and the final result would be decided by adding the times from both parts. Alain Prost’s injection problems then allowed Keke Rosberg into the lead.
John Watson was cutting through the field, passing the group fighting behind Keke Rosberg and then catching the Williams as it developed gearbox trouble. He moved ahead on the road but still had to overturn Keke Rosberg’s advantage from the first part. Niki Lauda’s attempt to join the pursuit ended in the barriers.
John Watson built the margin he needed and won on aggregate as the race reached the two-hour limit after 62 laps. Eddie Cheever took second, Didier Pironi third and Keke Rosberg fourth, followed by Derek Daly and Jacques Laffite. The victory rewarded John Watson’s pace and judgement after a weekend in which almost nothing had followed the original schedule.
After the race, John Watson headed the drivers’ standings with 26 points, followed by Didier Pironi on 20. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 38, with Ferrari on 26.
