Riccardo Patrese claimed his first Formula 1 victory in one of Monaco’s most extraordinary finishes. Late rain triggered a succession of accidents and stoppages among the leaders, leaving the Brabham driver to recover from his own spin and take the chequered flag ahead of the stationary cars of Didier Pironi and Andrea de Cesaris.

Championship background
Alain Prost arrived at round 6 leading the 1982 F1 World Championship on 18 points, with John Watson on 17. McLaren – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 29 points.
Race entries
Ferrari entered only Didier Pironi following Gilles Villeneuve’s death. Brabham split its engine choices, retaining BMW power for Nelson Piquet while Riccardo Patrese used the Cosworth-powered BT49. Ligier introduced the JS19, and the smaller teams faced an especially difficult weekend with only 20 race places available.
Pre-qualifying
Eight drivers contested Thursday’s early session for three places in main practice. Jean-Pierre Jarier, Jochen Mass and Derek Warwick advanced, while Raul Boesel, de Villota, Chico Serra, Riccardo Paletti and Teo Fabi were eliminated. The reduced Monaco grid therefore began shaping the weekend before most of the established runners had taken to the track.

Thursday Free Practice
Thursday brought tyre-supply problems for Ensign and Theodore, leaving Roberto Guerrero with limited running and Jan Lammers initially unable to circulate. John Watson and Nelson Piquet suffered engine failures, while Ligier worked through the new JS19’s first street-circuit outing. The lack of prior testing meant the opening session involved substantial set-up work across the field.
Thursday Qualifying
Rene Arnoux led Thursday’s qualifying, with de Andrea de Cesaris and Riccardo Patrese among the strongest challengers. Several drivers used spare cars after the morning’s trouble, and Jan Lammers remained unable to take a meaningful part. The short-lived qualifying tyres made a clear lap particularly valuable on the confined streets.
Saturday Free Practice
Nelson Piquet’s fuel-injection failure interrupted Saturday morning, and Alfa Romeo also struggled with fuel-system problems. Nigel Mansell stopped with a loss of fuel pressure, ran back to the pits and found more speed in the spare Lotus. Theodore finally obtained tyres for Jan Lammers, but the lost preparation left him with a daunting task.
Saturday Qualifying
Riccardo Patrese threatened pole on Saturday before Rene Arnoux answered with a late lap to secure first place. Riccardo Patrese joined him on the front row, followed by Bruno Giacomelli and Alain Prost. Nelson Piquet qualified only 13th in the BMW-powered Brabham, while the main-session cut removed another six drivers from the race.
Combined Qualifying Classification
Each driver’s faster time from the two qualifying sessions determined the overall order.

Sunday warm-up
The warm-up was relatively orderly. Brabham reverted to conventional iron brake discs, Alain Prost used Renault’s test car and Alfa Romeo checked its cars on the weighbridge. Eddie Cheever suffered a driveshaft-bearing problem, but the leading contenders otherwise completed their final preparations in full race trim.
What happened in the 1982 Monaco Grand Prix?
Rene Arnoux led until a spin at the Swimming Pool ended his race, leaving Alain Prost in control. Riccardo Patrese and Didier Pironi followed as the field gradually thinned. Rain arrived in the closing stages, making an already slippery circuit increasingly treacherous.
Alain Prost crashed with three laps remaining, handing the lead to Riccardo Patrese. The Italian then spun and stalled at the hairpin, apparently throwing away his opportunity. Didier Pironi moved ahead but stopped in the tunnel on the final lap; de Andrea de Cesaris also ran out of fuel, while Derek Daly’s damaged Williams succumbed to transmission failure.
Riccardo Patrese had managed to restart downhill and returned to the lead, taking an astonished first victory. Didier Pironi and de Andrea de Cesaris were classified second and third despite stopping, with Nigel Mansell, de Elio de Angelis and Derek Daly completing the points. Only five cars were still moving at the finish of a race whose final minutes repeatedly changed the apparent winner.
After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 18 points, followed by John Watson on 17. McLaren – Ford led the constructors’ table on 29, with Renault on 22.
