Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 17 leading the 2006 F1 World Championship on 116 points, with Fernando Alonso on 116. Renault headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 179 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Japanese Grand Prix. Adrian Sutil, Alexander Wurz, Anthony Davidson, Franck Montagny, Michael Ammermuller, Neel Jani, Sebastian Vettel also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Rain kept Friday morning quiet, with only a small number of regular race drivers doing more than installation work. Davidson led Honda’s third-car programme, while the other test drivers supplied much of the mileage. Franck Montagny ended his session in the gravel, and the leading championship contenders had little reason to risk their cars in the wet conditions.

The track began to dry during the afternoon, allowing more useful preparation. Giancarlo Fisichella narrowly beat Felipe Massa, with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso close behind. Sutil suffered an engine problem in Spyker MF1’s third car. The improving weather offered hope of a dry Saturday, but tyre performance remained central to judging the leading teams’ relative pace.

Sunshine returned for Saturday practice, although a strong wind continued across the circuit. Michael Schumacher set a time well clear of Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button, giving Ferrari an emphatic final benchmark. The session passed without a major accident, allowing teams to complete dry-weather work that Friday morning had denied them.

Qualifying

Felipe Massa claimed pole ahead of Michael Schumacher, completing another Ferrari front row. Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli filled the second row for Toyota, leaving Fernando Alonso fifth and Giancarlo Fisichella sixth. Ferrari’s speed and the two Toyotas between the title contenders made the opening laps particularly important for Renault.

Jenson Button qualified seventh, followed by Rubens Barrichello, Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg. Both McLarens missed Q3, a disappointing result after their recent pole positions. Fernando Alonso faced the task of clearing the Toyotas quickly enough to keep Michael Schumacher within reach.

What happened in the 2006 Japanese Grand Prix?

Felipe Massa led away before Michael Schumacher moved ahead on the third lap. Fernando Alonso worked past the Toyotas and then gained second from Felipe Massa through the pit stops, setting up a direct contest between the championship rivals. Schumacher retained a small but significant advantage as they negotiated traffic.

After the final stops, Schumacher’s engine failed and he pulled out of the race. Fernando Alonso inherited a clear lead, turning a close championship contest into a major opportunity for Renault. Felipe Massa continued in second, with Giancarlo Fisichella completing a strong team result behind Fernando Alonso.

Fernando Alonso won from Felipe Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella, followed by Jenson Button, Kimi Räikkönen, Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld. The victory gave Fernando Alonso a ten-point lead with one race left: a single point in Brazil would secure the championship regardless of Schumacher’s result.

After the race, Fernando Alonso headed the drivers’ standings with 126 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 116. Renault led the constructors’ table on 195, with Ferrari on 186.
