Championship background

Hamilton led Vettel by 17 points after Germany. Hungary offered Ferrari a chance to respond before the break, while the paddock paid tribute to former Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne, who had died earlier in the week.

Race entries

Antonio Giovinazzi replaced Charles Leclerc at Sauber for FP1. Leclerc returned for the remaining sessions, and the 20 regular drivers contested the race.

Free Practice

Daniel Ricciardo led FP1 with a 1:17.613, narrowly ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Red Bull Racing began strongly on the twisty circuit.

Vettel topped FP2 in 1:16.834, followed by Verstappen and Ricciardo. Ferrari‘s dry pace suggested a real opportunity to recover ground in the title contest.

Vettel remained fastest in FP3 with a 1:16.170, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen. The picture changed when rain arrived for qualifying.

Lance Stroll was required to start from the pit lane after changing his front wing.

What happened in the 2018 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Hamilton held the lead at the start, with Bottas close behind. Vettel passed Räikkönen and began pursuing the Mercedes pair, while Max Verstappen retired early with a power-unit problem.

Hamilton stopped before Vettel, who extended his opening stint in the hope of gaining track position. Ferrari‘s later stop did not get him ahead of Bottas, leaving the championship challenger behind the second Mercedes while Hamilton built his advantage.

Bottas defended second on increasingly worn tyres as Vettel and Räikkönen closed. Vettel finally found a way past near the end, with contact damaging Bottas’ front wing. Räikkönen also moved through into third.

Daniel Ricciardo recovered through the field and caught Bottas. Their battle produced another collision, but Ricciardo ultimately took fourth. Bottas finished fifth and received a ten-second penalty that did not change his position.

Gasly delivered an excellent sixth for Toro Rosso, ahead of Kevin Magnussen. Fernando Alonso finished eighth, with Sainz ninth and Romain Grosjean tenth. Ricciardo set fastest lap, which carried no additional point in 2018.

Hamilton won by more than 17 seconds and reached the summer break 24 points ahead of Vettel. Ferrari had limited the damage with a double podium, but Mercedes had converted a difficult-looking weekend into another significant championship gain.
