Sebastian Vettel won the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix from pole, giving Ferrari its first Montreal victory since 2004. The result returned him to the championship lead, although an early chequered flag meant the official race distance at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve was shorter than planned.

Championship background

Lewis Hamilton led Vettel by 14 points after Monaco. Canada had often suited Hamilton, but Ferrari and Red Bull Racing arrived with the pace to challenge, while Fernando Alonso marked his 300th Grand Prix entry.

Race entries

Nicholas Latifi drove Sergio Perez‘s Force India in FP1 at his home event. Perez returned for the remaining sessions, and the regular 20-driver race line-up was unchanged.

Free Practice

Max Verstappen topped FP1 in 1:13.302, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo. It was an encouraging start after his difficult Monaco weekend.

Verstappen remained fastest in FP2 with a 1:12.198, followed by Kimi Räikkönen and Ricciardo. Romain Grosjean damaged his front wing after striking a groundhog on the circuit.

Verstappen made it three sessions from three in FP3, setting 1:11.599. Sebastian Vettel and Räikkönen were within 0.051 seconds, keeping the qualifying contest finely balanced.

What happened in the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix?

Sebastian Vettel retained the lead at the start, with Valtteri Bottas holding second from Max Verstappen. A collision between Lance Stroll and Brendon Hartley brought out the safety car and ended both drivers’ afternoons almost immediately.

Vettel controlled the restart and gradually built a cushion. Bottas remained his closest pursuer, while Verstappen stayed in contention for a podium after his strong weekend.

Daniel Ricciardo gained fourth from Lewis Hamilton through the pit-stop sequence. Hamilton had an unsettled race with cooling concerns, and his progress was limited once he found himself behind the Red Bull Racing car.

Fernando Alonso‘s milestone event ended with an exhaust problem. Further forward, Vettel stayed clear of Bottas, with Verstappen, Ricciardo, Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen following in that order.

The chequered flag was mistakenly shown early after an instruction from race officials. Under the rules, the result was taken after 68 laps rather than the scheduled 70. Ricciardo’s later fastest laps were therefore voided, leaving Verstappen with the official fastest lap.

Nico Hülkenberg and Carlos Sainz delivered seventh and eighth for Renault, ahead of Esteban Ocon and Charles Leclerc. Vettel’s 50th career win moved him one point ahead of Hamilton, setting up another change of venue with the title contest almost level.
