What happened in the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton held the lead at the start, but the opening lap was interrupted by a frightening accident. Contact between Nico Hülkenberg and Romain Grosjean sent the Renault rolling into the barriers, where it came to rest upside down. Hülkenberg escaped unhurt and the safety car was deployed.

Kimi Räikkönen‘s final Ferrari race ended with an electrical problem on lap seven. The resulting virtual safety car gave Lewis Hamilton an opportunity to stop early, leaving him to manage a long final stint.

Max Verstappen recovered from a poor start and fought his way back towards the leading group. Daniel Ricciardo extended his opening stint much further than the other front-runners, briefly leading before making his stop.

Valtteri Bottas lost ground in the second half of the race. Sebastian Vettel moved past him, followed by Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, leaving the Mercedes driver to finish fifth after another tyre change.

Lewis Hamilton kept control to take his 11th victory of the season, with Sebastian Vettel second and Max Verstappen third. Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth in his last Red Bull Racing race, while Carlos Sainz delivered sixth on his final outing for Renault.

Charles Leclerc took seventh for Sauber ahead of Sergio Perez, Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen. Fernando Alonso finished just outside the points in his McLaren farewell. Hamilton ended the year on 408 points, Vettel on 320 and Kimi Räikkönen on 251, while Mercedes completed the season with 655 constructors’ points to Ferrari‘s 571.
