Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 6 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 100 points, with Nico Rosberg on 97. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 197 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton narrowly led Thursday’s FP1, while traffic prevented Daniel Ricciardo from improving a promising Red Bull lap. Max Chilton spun at Mirabeau and ended his session early. Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen also had moments, but escaped damage as the field reacquainted itself with Monaco’s narrow streets and unforgiving barriers.

A heavy storm before FP2 left the track saturated, keeping teams in their garages for the opening 45 minutes. Intermediate running eventually gave way to slicks in the final stages, when Fernando Alonso went fastest. Marcus Ericsson struck the barrier at Portier but managed to reverse away and return to the pits.

Clear weather brought a busy FP3, with slow tyre warm-up adding to the struggle for clear space. Lewis Hamilton overcame handling difficulties and a close call at Tabac to edge Daniel Ricciardo. Several drivers used the escape roads, underlining how difficult it was to combine a clean lap with optimum tyre temperature.

Qualifying

Nico Rosberg headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton second and Daniel Ricciardo third.

Nico Rosberg took pole after his final-run mistake at Mirabeau brought out yellow flags and prevented Lewis Hamilton improving. The stewards investigated but imposed no penalty. Marcus Ericsson‘s collision with Felipe Massa led to a pit-lane start.

Jules Bianchi was given a five-place grid penalty, for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Marcus Ericsson started from the pit lane after causing a collision with Felipe Massa in the first part of qualifying, preventing Massa from participating in the second session.

What happened in the 2014 Monaco Grand Prix?

Rosberg retained the lead from Hamilton, while Kimi Räikkönen made a strong start to move into the leading group. Sergio Pérez‘s early accident brought out the safety car, and Sebastian Vettel soon retired with power-unit trouble.

A later crash for Adrian Sutil triggered another safety car and the main pit-stop sequence. Räikkönen suffered a puncture following contact with Max Chilton during the neutralisation, losing his chance of a podium.

Rosberg kept Hamilton behind through the closing stages. Hamilton then struggled with something in his eye, allowing Ricciardo to close, but the Mercedes driver still held second at the finish.

Fernando Alonso finished fourth ahead of Nico Hülkenberg and Jenson Button. Bianchi crossed the line eighth and was classified ninth after a penalty, securing two invaluable points for Marussia despite having started near the back.

Further down the points places, Felipe Massa, Romain Grosjean, Jules Bianchi and Kevin Magnussen completed the scoring positions. Kimi Räikkönen set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 122 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 118. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 240, with Red Bull Racing on 99.
