Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 16 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 266 points, with Nico Rosberg on 256. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 522 points.

Race entries

Marussia entered only Max Chilton following Jules Bianchi‘s serious accident in Japan. Sergey Sirotkin made his first Grand Prix weekend appearance in practice for Sauber.

Free Practice

Nico Rosberg led Sochi’s first FP1 as teams learned the new circuit. Valtteri Bottas lost running after faulty tyre blankets damaged his tyres, while Sergey Sirotkin made his Formula One practice debut for Sauber. Roberto Merhi also drove for Caterham, gaining experience as the unfamiliar surface gradually began to improve.

Lewis Hamilton moved ahead in FP2 as drivers gained confidence around Sochi and McLaren showed encouraging pace through Kevin Magnussen. Nico Rosberg spoiled his final quick lap with a mistake. The circuit was still evolving rapidly, with additional support-race running helping clean the surface and making the opening practice times only an early reference.

Lewis Hamilton remained fastest in FP3 despite spinning near the end of the lap and narrowly avoiding the wall. Kevin Magnussen damaged his suspension over a kerb, and Pastor Maldonado failed to set a time after an energy-recovery failure. New run-off deterrents and a reduced pit-lane speed limit also shaped the final preparations.

Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hülkenberg and Max Chilton all received five-place grid penalties for changing their gearboxes.

Pastor Maldonado received a five-place grid penalty to complete the penalty he received for exceeding his quota of five engine components for the season at the Japanese Grand Prix. He then received a further five-place penalty after qualifying for a gearbox change.

What happened in the 2014 Russian Grand Prix?

Rosberg attacked Hamilton into Turn 2 but locked both front tyres and ran wide. He returned the position and stopped at the end of the lap, committing to completing the remaining distance on one set of tyres.

Hamilton controlled the lead while Bottas initially followed closest. Rosberg recovered through the midfield using Mercedes‘ pace and a long uninterrupted stint, steadily returning to the front of the race.

Rosberg passed Bottas to regain second, but Hamilton remained comfortably ahead. Bottas finished third and set the fastest lap, unable to recover the position despite his fresher tyres.

Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen finished fourth and fifth, giving Mercedes-powered cars the first five places. Fernando Alonso held off Daniel Ricciardo for sixth. The Mercedes one-two made the constructors’ title secure with three rounds remaining.

Further down the points places, Daniel Ricciardo, Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Räikkönen and Sergio Pérez completed the scoring positions. Valtteri Bottas set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 291 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 274. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 565, with Red Bull Racing on 342.
