Lewis Hamilton made a one-stop strategy work to perfection in Canada, beating Sebastian Vettel after Ferrari‘s flying start. Valtteri Bottas completed the podium, while Nico Rosberg endured a far more difficult afternoon in the other Mercedes.

Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 7 leading the 2016 F1 World Championship on 106 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 82. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 188 points.

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1, but Felipe Massa’s heavy accident at Turn 1 interrupted the opening work. The Williams spun backwards into the barriers and sustained substantial rear-end damage, requiring a lengthy recovery. Teams then resumed their tyre programmes, with Ferrari also showing encouraging pace as the circuit became busier.

Lewis Hamilton remained quickest in FP2 as teams progressed from short ultrasoft runs to longer stints on all three available compounds. That comparison was important for understanding which tyres could combine speed with durability around Montréal. With attention shifting to heavier fuel loads, the leading times largely settled before the session ended.

The threat of rain prompted early qualifying simulations in FP3, with Sebastian Vettel setting the pace before intermittent showers complicated the running. Kevin Magnussen then crashed heavily at Turn 7, bringing out the red flags. Renault faced a major repair job while the rest of the field lost valuable final preparation.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Nico Rosberg second and Sebastian Vettel third.

Lewis Hamilton took pole ahead of Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel. Kevin Magnussen missed qualifying after damaging his Renault in final practice, while Carlos Sainz crashed in Q2 and subsequently received a gearbox penalty.

Daniil Kvyat received a three-place grid penalty for causing an accident with Kevin Magnussen during the previous race in Monaco.

Marcus Ericsson received a three-place grid penalty for causing an accident with his teammate Felipe Nasr during the previous race in Monaco.

Kevin Magnussen failed to set a time within 107% of the fastest lap during Q1. As a result, his participation in the race came at the discretion of the stewards.

Kevin Magnussen received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Carlos Sainz received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

What happened in the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix?

Sebastian Vettel launched past both Mercedes cars to lead into the first corner. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg touched as they negotiated the opening turn, sending Rosberg wide and down the order.

Jenson Button‘s engine failure brought a virtual safety car and an early strategic split. Ferrari brought Vettel in, committing him to a two-stop race, while Hamilton stayed out and aimed to make one change of tyres.

Vettel’s second stop returned the lead to Hamilton. The Ferrari closed on fresher tyres, but Hamilton managed the gap and his own tyres well enough to secure another victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Valtteri Bottas finished third for Williams, ahead of Max Verstappen. Nico Rosberg lost time with a slow puncture and then spun during his late pursuit of Verstappen, recovering to finish fifth. Daniel Ricciardo followed in sixth.

Further down the points places, Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hülkenberg, Carlos Sainz and Sergio Pérez completed the scoring positions. Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2016 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 116 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 107. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 223, with Ferrari on 147.
