Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 5 leading the 2016 F1 World Championship on 100 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 57. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 157 points.

Race entries

Max Verstappen raced for Red Bull Racing, replacing Daniil Kvyat. Daniil Kvyat raced for Toro Rosso, replacing Max Verstappen. Esteban Ocon also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Ferrari led FP1 on soft tyres while Mercedes concentrated on mediums and completed more laps. Max Verstappen began settling into Red Bull, just behind Daniel Ricciardo. Renault’s Esteban Ocon failed to record a time after a debris-related tyre failure, and smoke from Sergio Pérez’s car restricted Force India’s morning programme.

Nico Rosberg went fastest once Mercedes switched to soft tyres in FP2. Renault suffered another tyre failure, this time on Jolyon Palmer’s car on the main straight, bringing out red flags. McLaren also lost running to an electrical problem for Jenson Button and repairs to Fernando Alonso’s floor plank after an excursion.

Nico Rosberg’s early FP3 lap remained unbeaten, although a faulty sensor briefly interrupted his qualifying preparations before Mercedes sent him back out. Max Verstappen edged Daniel Ricciardo for the first time that weekend, taking fourth behind Sebastian Vettel. Sergio Perez was encouraged by Force India’s upgrades as he completed the session inside the top eight.

What happened in the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix?

Nico Rosberg passed Lewis Hamilton at the start, but Hamilton attacked again on the run towards Turn 4. He went onto the grass as Rosberg defended, lost control and collided with his team-mate, eliminating both Mercedes cars.

Daniel Ricciardo led Max Verstappen when racing resumed. Red Bull and Ferrari then split their strategies: Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel moved to three stops, while Verstappen and Kimi Räikkönen committed to two.

That decision left Max Verstappen defending the lead from Kimi Räikkönen through a long final stint. The Ferrari repeatedly closed within striking distance, but Verstappen protected his tyres and position with remarkable composure.

Verstappen won at 18 years and 228 days, ahead of Räikkönen and Vettel. Ricciardo’s late puncture ended his challenge for third but left him fourth, while Carlos Sainz gave the home crowd another result to celebrate with sixth.

Further down the points places, Sergio Pérez, Felipe Massa, Jenson Button and Daniil Kvyat completed the scoring positions. Daniil Kvyat set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2016 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 100 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 61. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 157, with Ferrari on 109.
