Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 6 leading the 2016 F1 World Championship on 100 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 61. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 157 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led Thursday’s FP1, but the streets soon supplied the drama. Felipe Massa hit the barrier at Sainte Dévote, while a loose drain cover later punctured Nico Rosberg’s tyre and damaged Jenson Button’s McLaren. That incident ended the session early, underlining how little margin Monaco offered before qualifying had even begun.

Daniel Ricciardo put Red Bull firmly in contention by leading FP2 comfortably. Sebastian Vettel endured a scrappy afternoon, spinning at Mirabeau and later striking the barrier at Sainte Dévote. Romain Grosjean, Rio Haryanto and Kevin Magnussen also hit trouble, each triggering a virtual safety car as the barriers repeatedly interrupted teams’ preparations.

Sebastian Vettel recovered to lead a tightly matched FP3, with Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo all close behind. Max Verstappen clipped the wall on the climb towards Casino Square but still finished fifth. Both Renault drivers had accidents, with Jolyon Palmer’s crash at the swimming pool also interrupting one of Lewis Hamilton’s quick laps.

Kimi Räikkönen received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Felipe Nasr and Max Verstappen failed to set a time within 107% of the fastest lap during Q1. They had to apply to the stewards for permission to start the race. Both opted to start the race from the pit lane. Verstappen started in front, as he had set a time in qualifying, ahead of Nasr, who did not set a time.

What happened in the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix?

The race began behind the safety car on a soaked circuit. Once the field was released, Daniel Ricciardo pulled clear as Nico Rosberg struggled with brake temperatures. Rosberg eventually let Lewis Hamilton through to pursue the leader.

Hamilton stayed on wet tyres while Ricciardo changed to intermediates. When the circuit became ready for slicks, Hamilton made the direct switch, but Ricciardo’s following stop unravelled because his replacement tyres were not ready.

Hamilton emerged in front and resisted Ricciardo through the final stint. The Australian remained close but could not find a way past around the narrow streets, leaving him bitterly disappointed after a race he had controlled early on.

Sergio Pérez took third ahead of Sebastian Vettel, while Fernando Alonso finished fifth. Nico Hülkenberg passed Nico Rosberg at the finish for sixth. Max Verstappen and Kimi Räikkönen were among those whose races ended against the barriers.

Further down the points places, Nico Rosberg, Carlos Sainz, Jenson Button and Felipe Massa completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2016 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 106 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 82. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 188, with Ferrari on 121.
