Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 10 leading the 2016 F1 World Championship on 153 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 142. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 295 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the British Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton edged Nico Rosberg in FP1 before Mercedes turned to longer runs on harder tyres. Charles Leclerc made his first practice appearance for Haas, while Esteban Ocon drove for Renault. Sebastian Vettel tested Ferrari’s revised halo protection device but raised concerns about its effect on visibility from the cockpit.

Lewis Hamilton led FP2 while Nico Rosberg missed the entire session with a water leak, leaving Red Bull as the closest challenger. Ferrari compared different tyre compounds before both drivers switched to softs. McLaren’s afternoon was mixed: Fernando Alonso took sixth, but Jenson Button twice needed repairs, and Daniil Kvyat damaged his front wing over a kerb.

A damp start to FP3 was followed by a lengthy stoppage after Marcus Ericsson crashed heavily at Stowe. Barrier repairs left only five minutes for the final runs, with Lewis Hamilton narrowly ahead of Nico Rosberg. Marcus Ericsson went for hospital checks, while gearbox changes would leave both him and Sebastian Vettel facing grid penalties.

Sebastian Vettel received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Marcus Ericsson did not take part in qualifying following a heavy crash during FP3. His participation in the race came at the discretion of the stewards, who allowed him to start the race. He was required to start from the pit lane after getting a new survival cell.

What happened in the 2016 British Grand Prix?

The field started behind the safety car after heavy rain. Hamilton controlled the restart, and a virtual safety car for Pascal Wehrlein‘s stranded Manor helped the leaders change from wet tyres to intermediates.

Max Verstappen excelled in the slippery conditions, passing Nico Rosberg around the outside at Becketts. Once slick tyres became the better option, Rosberg regained the position, but neither could seriously threaten Hamilton.

Rosberg then developed a gearbox problem. Mercedes gave instructions that helped him continue, but part of that advice breached the radio restrictions, resulting in a ten-second post-race penalty.

Hamilton’s win therefore came ahead of Verstappen and Rosberg in the classified result. Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth, Kimi Räikkönen fifth and Sergio Pérez sixth, with Nico Hülkenberg giving Force India a second strong points finish.

Further down the points places, Nico Hülkenberg, Carlos Sainz, Sebastian Vettel and Daniil Kvyat completed the scoring positions. Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2016 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 168 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 167. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 335, with Ferrari on 204.

Nico Rosberg originally finished second, but received a ten-second time penalty for receiving illegal assistance via team radio, demoting him to third.

Sebastian Vettel received a five-second penalty for forcing Felipe Massa off the track.

Kevin Magnussen retired from the race, but was classified as finishing as he had completed 90% of the race distance.
