Sebastian Vettel took an eighth consecutive victory in Austin, setting a new record for wins in succession within one season. Romain Grosjean split the Red Bulls with second place, ahead of Mark Webber.

Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 18 leading the 2013 F1 World Championship on 347 points, with Fernando Alonso on 217. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 513 points.

Race entries

Heikki Kovalainen replaced Kimi Räikkönen at Lotus for the final two races after Räikkönen opted for back surgery. Kovalainen joined Romain Grosjean after serving as a Caterham reserve earlier in the season.

Free Practice

Fog delayed FP1 by preventing the medical helicopter from operating, and further helicopter trouble interrupted the running after it began. Fernando Alonso eventually led the shortened session. Jenson Button received a grid penalty for overtaking under red flags, adding a lasting consequence to an already disrupted morning.

Clearer, warmer FP2 conditions allowed teams to recover lost mileage, with Red Bull setting the pace. Sebastian Vettel was urged to conserve his tyres during the longer runs. Max Chilton stopped after a brake failure and spin at the final corner, while the rest of the field continued gathering race data.

Red Bull remained ahead in FP3 as teams completed their last setup work before qualifying. Much of the field returned to the garages with around twenty minutes left to prepare medium-tyre simulations, while Mark Webber continued lapping. The late change of compound then sharpened the final comparison after Friday’s disrupted opening session.

What happened in the 2013 United States Grand Prix?

Vettel retained the lead at the start, while Grosjean moved ahead of Webber. A collision involving Pastor Maldonado and Adrian Sutil sent the Force India into the barriers and brought out the safety car.

Vettel controlled the restart and steadily opened a gap. Grosjean maintained a strong pace in second, giving Webber a difficult task as the Red Bull driver tried to restore the team’s usual one-two order.

Webber closed during the later stages but could not pass the Lotus. Vettel remained unchallenged and added the fastest lap near the end, although the rules awarded no extra point for it.

Lewis Hamilton finished fourth ahead of Alonso and Hülkenberg. Pérez took seventh, and Bottas scored his first Formula 1 points in eighth. Vettel’s victory extended an extraordinary run that had begun in Belgium.

Further down the points places, Sergio Pérez, Valtteri Bottas, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2013 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 372 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 227. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 553, with Mercedes on 348.
