2013 British Grand Prix: F1 Race, Qualifying & Winners

Nico Rosberg won a dramatic British Grand Prix marked by multiple tyre failures and Sebastian Vettel‘s late retirement. Mark Webber charged into second, while Fernando Alonso completed the podium after a frantic final restart.

Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 8 leading the 2013 F1 World Championship on 132 points, with Fernando Alonso on 96. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 201 points.

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the British Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Heavy rain made FP1 largely unproductive, with teams waiting until the closing minutes before setting representative times. Daniel Ricciardo led the limited running. Charles Pic crashed at Club and lost his front wing, while Esteban Gutierrez recovered from aquaplaning, reinforcing the risks of venturing onto a circuit crossed by standing water.

Improving conditions allowed FP2 to move from intermediates to slicks within the opening minutes. Nico Rosberg set the pace, but Felipe Massa lost control on a damp patch exiting Stowe and damaged his Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton later received a reprimand for failing to follow the required route around a pit-entry bollard.

Nico Rosberg led a warmer, dry FP3, but Sergio Pérez’s left-front tyre failure briefly stopped the session and damaged McLaren’s floor. Repairs allowed him to return for the closing minutes before another spin at Becketts. The failure added an unwelcome tyre concern as teams completed their qualifying preparations.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Nico Rosberg second and Sebastian Vettel third.

Lewis Hamilton took pole ahead of Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel. Paul di Resta‘s fifth-fastest time was removed when he and his car were found below the minimum weight, sending him to the back.

Paul di Resta was excluded from qualifying and sent to the back of the grid because he and his car were found to be under the minimum weight limit of 640 kg (1,410 lb).

Giedo van der Garde was imposed a five-place grid penalty for causing an accident with Nico Hülkenberg at the preceding Canadian Grand Prix. He later incurred a second five-place grid penalty because the Caterham team had changed his gearbox.

What happened in the 2013 British Grand Prix?

Hamilton led from the start before a rear tyre failed, dropping him to the back. Felipe Massa and Jean-Éric Vergne also suffered major tyre failures, raising urgent concerns and bringing a safety car to clear debris.

Vettel inherited the lead and controlled the middle phase, with Rosberg close behind. A gearbox failure then stopped the Red Bull near the pit straight, causing another safety car and handing Rosberg the advantage.

Fresh tyres transformed the closing laps. Webber passed rivals to challenge Rosberg, while Alonso moved into third and Hamilton recovered strongly after his earlier puncture. Sergio Pérez also suffered a tyre failure during the race.

Rosberg held on to win ahead of Webber and Alonso. Hamilton finished fourth and Räikkönen fifth, while Massa recovered sixth. The failures prompted changes to the tyre specifications and heightened scrutiny before the next round.

Further down the points places, Adrian Sutil, Daniel Ricciardo, Paul di Resta and Nico Hülkenberg completed the scoring positions. Mark Webber set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2013 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 132 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 111. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 219, with Mercedes on 171.
