Sebastian Vettel continued his winning run with a dominant Abu Dhabi victory. Mark Webber finished second and Nico Rosberg third, while Kimi Räikkönen‘s race ended almost as soon as it began.

Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 17 leading the 2013 F1 World Championship on 322 points, with Fernando Alonso on 207. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 470 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Heikki Kovalainen, James Calado, Rodolfo Gonzalez also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Romain Grosjean led a sunny FP1 as Lotus began the weekend strongly. Reserve drivers Heikki Kovalainen, James Calado and Rodolfo Gonzalez received outings, with Marussia using Rodolfo Gonzalez to compare floor configurations. The daytime session provided an initial setup reference before the more representative twilight conditions of the afternoon and evening running.

Red Bull moved ahead in FP2 as teams timed qualifying simulations around sunset before switching to race runs. Romain Grosjean reported a problem after running off at Turn 20 and needed repeated repairs, interrupting Lotus’s work. Max Chilton also spun, while the remaining teams gathered substantial mileage as temperatures fell.

Sebastian Vettel led FP3 as Mercedes stayed close during the final qualifying rehearsal. Teams began on medium tyres before changing to softs near the end. Jules Bianchi spun and clipped the wall, ending his participation before the late rush, while the hotter afternoon conditions differed from those expected for qualifying itself.

Mark Webber took pole ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg. Räikkönen’s fifth-fastest time was removed when his Lotus failed a floor-deflection test, sending him to the back of the grid.

What happened in the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

Vettel passed Webber at the start and immediately began building a lead. Rosberg also moved ahead of the pole-sitter, while Räikkönen damaged his suspension in contact with Giedo van der Garde and retired on the opening lap.

Vettel’s pace put the victory beyond serious challenge. Webber recovered second through the race, with Rosberg holding the remaining podium position as Grosjean pursued the leading group.

Alonso extended his strategy and made late progress, including a forceful move after leaving the pits. Nico Hülkenberg‘s hopes were damaged by a drive-through penalty for an unsafe release during his stop.

Vettel won by more than thirty seconds ahead of Webber and Rosberg. Grosjean finished fourth and Alonso fifth, while Paul di Resta took sixth. The result gave Vettel his seventh consecutive victory.

Further down the points places, Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, Sergio Pérez and Adrian Sutil completed the scoring positions. Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2013 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 347 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 217. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 513, with Mercedes on 334.
