Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 5 leading the 2013 F1 World Championship on 77 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 67. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 109 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Spanish Grand Prix. Heikki Kovalainen, Rodolfo Gonzalez also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Fernando Alonso led a Ferrari one-two in FP1, but a wet circuit disrupted the planned assessment of upgrades brought to the first European round. Drivers spent most of the session on intermediates before switching to slicks near the end. The late improvement prompted a rush to gather useful dry-weather data.

Dry FP2 allowed teams to recover morning mileage and assess their aerodynamic upgrades, with Sebastian Vettel narrowly fastest. Di Resta stopped after a rear tyre delaminated, putting durability back in focus. Most teams then concentrated on longer runs, while Felipe Massa and Adrian Sutil narrowly avoided contact late in the session.

Felipe Massa narrowly edged Kimi Räikkönen in FP3 as Ferrari, Lotus and Red Bull looked closely matched. Aerodynamic evaluation continued, with flow-visualisation paint on Sebastian Vettel’s car. Sergio Pérez damaged his front wing over the final-corner kerbs and reported a front-end problem, while teams saved their medium-tyre qualifying simulations for the closing stages.

Felipe Massa was given a three-place grid penalty for blocking Mark Webber.

Esteban Gutiérrez was given a three-place grid penalty for blocking Kimi Räikkönen.

What happened in the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix?

Alonso made an assertive opening lap, going around the outside of Räikkönen and Hamilton at Turn 3. That move put the Ferrari into immediate contention behind Rosberg and Vettel.

Ferrari committed to a four-stop strategy, allowing Alonso to attack on fresher tyres. Mercedes struggled to sustain its qualifying pace over longer runs, and the early leaders began to fall behind the faster race packages.

Räikkönen made three stops and remained Alonso’s closest challenger, but could not match the Ferrari‘s overall pace. Massa also progressed strongly despite his grid penalty to complete a double podium for Ferrari.

Alonso won ahead of Räikkönen and Massa, with Vettel fourth and Webber fifth. Rosberg finished sixth, while Hamilton fell outside the points. The result tightened the championship contest behind Vettel.

Further down the points places, Paul di Resta, Jenson Button, Sergio Pérez and Daniel Ricciardo completed the scoring positions. Esteban Gutierrez set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2013 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 89 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 85. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 131, with Ferrari on 117.
