Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 7 leading the 2013 F1 World Championship on 107 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 86. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 164 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Canadian Grand Prix. Alexander Rossi also took part in practice.

Free Practice

A soaked circuit gradually dried through FP1, delaying meaningful testing of Pirelli’s prototype slick tyres until late on. Di Resta took the fastest time in the closing scramble. Jules Bianchi stopped after an excursion and overheating warning, while Pastor Maldonado hit the wall and damaged his front wing as grip changed.

Dry FP2 finally allowed extended prototype-tyre evaluation before teams switched to their race compounds. Fernando Alonso narrowly led Lewis Hamilton, while numerous drivers cut the final chicane or spun without serious damage. Longer runs then became the priority, with heavy fuel and fading tyres pushing lap times away from the early benchmarks.

Barrier repairs delayed FP3 and reduced it to half an hour, with a wet surface further limiting preparation. Slicks became worthwhile only in the final minutes, producing a frantic sequence of changing fastest laps. Mark Webber emerged ahead as all 22 cars crowded the track and several drivers ran wide.

Kimi Räikkönen and Daniel Ricciardo were each given a two-place grid penalty for failing to queue in the fast lane at the resumption on the second qualifying session.

Romain Grosjean was given a ten-place grid penalty for causing an avoidable accident in the previous race.

What happened in the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix?

Vettel led away and established a clear advantage as Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber and Alonso pursued. Bottas could not sustain his wet-weather qualifying position in the dry race and slipped back.

Different tyre choices brought the chasing drivers together. Webber suffered damage while lapping Giedo van der Garde, who received a penalty, and Alonso moved ahead of the Red Bull during his recovery.

Alonso caught and passed Hamilton late in the race to secure second. Vettel remained comfortably clear, with Webber fourth and Rosberg fifth behind the podium finishers.

During recovery of Esteban Gutiérrez‘s stranded Sauber, marshal Mark Robinson was struck by the recovery vehicle and later died in hospital. Drivers and teams paid tribute, and the fatal accident cast a sombre shadow over the result.

Further down the points places, Paul di Resta, Felipe Massa, Kimi Räikkönen and Adrian Sutil completed the scoring positions. Mark Webber set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2013 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 132 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 96. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 201, with Ferrari on 145.
