Sebastian Vettel sealed his fourth consecutive world championship with victory in India. Nico Rosberg finished second and Romain Grosjean third, while Red Bull also secured the constructors’ title with three races remaining.

Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 16 leading the 2013 F1 World Championship on 297 points, with Fernando Alonso on 207. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 445 points.

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Indian Grand Prix. James Calado also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Sebastian Vettel led FP1 as Red Bull looked immediately comfortable around the flowing Buddh circuit. Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari suffered a gearbox problem that restricted him to only a handful of timed laps. The lost mileage mattered as Ferrari tried to establish its pace against the dominant Red Bulls and a competitive Lotus.

Sebastian Vettel remained ahead in a warmer FP2, while Fernando Alonso recovered useful running after his morning gearbox trouble. Pastor Maldonado suffered a deflating front tyre after a loose wheel nut, prompting another substantial fine for Williams. The incident interrupted his programme as the leading teams continued preparing for qualifying and the race.

Smog delayed FP3 because the medical helicopter could not operate safely, reducing the available running before qualifying. Once the session began, Sebastian Vettel again led Red Bull’s challenge, while Fernando Alonso improved his position. The shortened preparation period made an already important final hour more compressed for the teams.

Sebastian Vettel headed qualifying for Red Bull Racing, with Nico Rosberg second and Lewis Hamilton third.

Sebastian Vettel took pole ahead of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Romain Grosjean was eliminated in Q1 after Lotus tried to progress on the harder tyre, leaving him seventeenth on the grid.

What happened in the 2013 Indian Grand Prix?

Vettel led from the start, while Massa moved into second. Contact with Webber damaged Alonso’s front wing, immediately compromising the Ferrari driver’s chances of keeping the championship mathematically alive.

Vettel stopped early to discard his soft tyres and worked back through the field. The Red Bull‘s pace allowed him to regain control despite dropping into traffic, while Webber’s alternative strategy ended with an alternator failure.

Grosjean recovered through an effective one-stop strategy, reaching the podium after starting seventeenth. Räikkönen’s tyres faded late, while Pérez took advantage of the changing order to secure a strong McLaren result.

Vettel won ahead of Rosberg and Grosjean, followed by Massa and Pérez. Alonso finished outside the points, confirming Vettel as champion. Red Bull‘s fourth successive constructors’ crown completed the team’s celebrations.

Further down the points places, Kimi Räikkönen, Paul di Resta, Adrian Sutil and Daniel Ricciardo completed the scoring positions. Kimi Räikkönen set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2013 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 322 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 207. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 470, with Mercedes on 313.
