Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 8 leading the 2015 F1 World Championship on 151 points, with Nico Rosberg on 134. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 285 points.

Race entries

The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Austrian Grand Prix. Jolyon Palmer also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Nico Rosberg led a Mercedes one-two in FP1, while Sebastian Vettel managed only four laps before a gearbox problem stopped his programme. Fernando Alonso also encountered gearbox trouble, although he returned later to assess McLaren‘s new aerodynamic package. Kimi Räikkönen was the only rival within a second of the leading Mercedes. For Ferrari and McLaren, recovering lost mileage was already becoming as important as outright speed.

Sebastian Vettel bounced back to head FP2, narrowly ahead of Nico Rosberg, whose car lost gearbox oil and completed no timed laps in the closing twenty minutes. Lewis Hamilton struggled to put together a clean supersoft lap and finished fifth. Lotus placed both cars in the top ten, but McLaren again ended its running early. Reliability issues prevented several teams from completing an uninterrupted comparison of qualifying pace and longer runs.

Sebastian Vettel remained fastest in FP3, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton, before Fernando Alonso stopped on the main straight and brought out a red flag. Rain arrived during the interruption, so the resumed session offered little chance to improve. Several drivers never completed their planned supersoft runs; Sergio Perez was the only one to set a time on that compound. Qualifying preparations therefore ended with an uneven set of tyre comparisons.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Nico Rosberg second and Sebastian Vettel third.

Lewis Hamilton took pole despite spinning on his final attempt, while Nico Rosberg also went off on his last lap. Kimi Räikkönen was eliminated in Q1 after a communication error left him without time for another improving lap.

What happened in the 2015 Austrian Grand Prix?

Rosberg overtook Hamilton into the first corner. Further back, Räikkönen lost control and collided with Fernando Alonso, whose McLaren rode onto the Ferrari; both drivers escaped unharmed as the safety car was deployed.

Rosberg controlled the restart and maintained his lead through the first stint. Hamilton remained close enough to keep the pressure on, but emerged behind after the stops and crossed the pit-exit line, earning a five-second penalty.

Vettel’s tyre change was delayed by a wheel-nut problem, dropping him behind Massa. The Ferrari closed on the Williams during the final stint, but Massa held the position to the flag.

Rosberg won ahead of Hamilton, whose penalty did not alter his finishing position. Bottas took fifth behind Massa and Vettel, while Nico Hülkenberg finished sixth. Pastor Maldonado passed Max Verstappen late in the battle for seventh.

Further down the points places, Pastor Maldonado, Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez and Daniel Ricciardo completed the scoring positions. Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2015 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 169 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 159. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 328, with Ferrari on 192.
