2015 British Grand Prix: F1 Race, Qualifying & Winners

Lewis Hamilton won at Silverstone after Williams threatened a major upset and late rain transformed the race. Nico Rosberg completed a Mercedes one-two, while Sebastian Vettel‘s well-timed tyre change earned Ferrari third place.

Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 9 leading the 2015 F1 World Championship on 169 points, with Nico Rosberg on 159. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 328 points.

Race entries

The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the British Grand Prix. Jolyon Palmer, Raffaele Marciello, Susie Wolff also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Nico Rosberg recovered from a hydraulic problem and a gearbox change to edge Lewis Hamilton in FP1. Max Verstappen‘s third place underlined Toro Rosso‘s promising chassis performance, although he remained more than a second behind Mercedes. Jolyon Palmer, Susie Wolff and Raffaele Marciello all took part in place of regular drivers. The morning combined useful reserve-driver mileage with an early reminder that Mercedes‘ pace advantage did not make its running trouble-free.

Luffield caught out two drivers in FP2: Romain Grosjean and later Roberto Merhi became stranded in the gravel, each causing a red flag. Nico Rosberg stayed quickest, with both Ferraris ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who was unhappy with his car’s set-up. Williams also had work to do after finishing only tenth and twelfth, while McLaren and Sauber struggled near the back. The interrupted afternoon left several teams searching for a better balance.

Lewis Hamilton found a stronger rhythm in final practice and finished half a second clear of Nico Rosberg. His team-mate lost substantial running while Mercedes investigated a possible gearbox oil leak. Ferrari and Toro Rosso filled the next four places, but only Kimi Räikkönen stayed within a second of Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso‘s session ended after just six laps, leaving McLaren short of preparation again as qualifying approached.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Nico Rosberg second and Felipe Massa third.

Lewis Hamilton took pole ahead of Nico Rosberg, with Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas on the second row. Track limits were closely monitored, and several drivers lost lap times for running beyond the circuit boundaries.

What happened in the 2015 British Grand Prix?

Massa surged into the lead at the start, and Bottas moved into second after Hamilton’s unsuccessful attack at the restart. An opening-lap collision had eliminated both Lotus cars and Jenson Button, bringing out the safety car.

Williams held the first two places until Hamilton stopped early and used a rapid out-lap to take the lead through the pit sequence. Rosberg remained behind the Williams pair until the first rain made the surface increasingly slippery.

Rosberg passed both Williams cars and closed on Hamilton. Hamilton then chose the right moment to switch to intermediates, with Vettel making the same call as heavier rain arrived and the other leaders stayed out longer.

Hamilton won from Rosberg and Vettel, while Massa and Bottas finished fourth and fifth. Kimi Räikkönen‘s earlier switch to intermediates had proved premature. Fernando Alonso took tenth, scoring his first point of the season.

Further down the points places, Nico Hülkenberg, Kimi Räikkönen, Sergio Pérez and Fernando Alonso completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2015 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 194 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 177. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 371, with Ferrari on 211.
