Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 7 leading the 2015 F1 World Championship on 126 points, with Nico Rosberg on 116. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 242 points.

Race entries

The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 despite a spin under braking, with Nico Rosberg following him. Romain Grosjean and Nico Hülkenberg gave Lotus and Force India encouraging starts, although the gap to Mercedes remained substantial. Carlos Sainz stopped at the end of the pit lane late in the session, interrupting his attempt to begin a timed run. The morning established Mercedes as the benchmark while highlighting the pace of several other Mercedes-powered cars.

Teams hurried through their dry-weather work before heavy rain arrived midway through FP2. Ferrari closed the gap, with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen both within four tenths of Lewis Hamilton. The quickest driver then had the session’s biggest incident: Lewis Hamilton went into the barrier at the hairpin while running intermediates in the downpour. Most of the field had completed its meaningful running before the conditions deteriorated.

Two red flags badly restricted final practice. Felipe Nasr crashed while warming his tyres with DRS open, and the brief resumption ended when Jenson Button stopped with a power-unit problem. Nico Rosberg finished quickest, but Lewis Hamilton completed only nine laps and was last on the timing sheet. The interruptions left several drivers without a clean qualifying rehearsal and gave Sauber and McLaren repair work before the next session.

Max Verstappen received a five-place grid penalty for causing an avoidable collision during the previous race and a ten-place grid penalty for exceeding the allowed internal combustion engine allocation.

Sebastian Vettel received a five-place grid penalty for overtaking under red flags during the third free practice session.

Jenson Button received permission from the stewards to start the race despite not setting a qualifying time. He later received ten- and five-place grid penalties for exceeding the allowed allocation of two of his power unit components.

What happened in the 2015 Canadian Grand Prix?

Hamilton led cleanly from the start and built enough of a gap to keep Rosberg out of immediate attacking range. Vettel and Massa began recovering from their lowly grid positions, picking their way through the midfield.

Räikkönen spun at the hairpin shortly after his first stop, losing the time that allowed Bottas to move ahead. The two Mercedes drivers completed their tyre changes without trouble and continued their contest clear of the rest.

Vettel recovered despite a slow early stop, while Massa made his one-stop strategy work effectively. Romain Grosjean damaged a tyre while lapping Will Stevens, losing ground and receiving a penalty for the collision.

Hamilton finished 2.2 seconds ahead of Rosberg, with Bottas third and Räikkönen fourth. Vettel and Massa completed the top six. Both McLarens retired, leaving the team without a finish after its Monaco points breakthrough.

Further down the points places, Pastor Maldonado, Nico Hülkenberg, Daniil Kvyat and Romain Grosjean completed the scoring positions. Kimi Räikkönen set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2015 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 151 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 134. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 285, with Ferrari on 180.
