Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 6 leading the 2013 F1 World Championship on 89 points, with Kimi Räikkönen on 85. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 131 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Nico Rosberg led Thursday’s FP1 after teams initially waited to conserve tyres and let the racing line improve. As grip increased, the session became busier, with several drivers using escape roads or cutting chicanes. Adrian Sutil spun late at Sainte Dévote, but major accident damage was avoided during the opening running.

Nico Rosberg stayed ahead in FP2 as Mercedes compared supersoft performance over both short and longer runs. Romain Grosjean crashed at Sainte Dévote, while a loose kerb at the swimming pool caused a separate stoppage. Kimi Räikkönen’s consistent longer-run pace offered Lotus encouragement despite Mercedes’ stronger single-lap showing.

FP3 brought costly accidents for Felipe Massa, Adrian Sutil and Romain Grosjean. Felipe Massa’s heavy impact at Sainte Dévote left Ferrari unable to prepare him for qualifying, while Romain Grosjean’s late crash ended the session before many rivals completed their final laps. Nico Rosberg remained quickest, but the interruptions distorted the rest of the order.

Qualifying

Nico Rosberg headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton second and Sebastian Vettel third.

Nico Rosberg took pole ahead of Lewis Hamilton after rain affected Q1 and Q2. Felipe Massa missed qualifying following his practice crash, while Jules Bianchi failed to set a representative time after an engine problem; both were permitted to race.

Max Chilton was given a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Jules Bianchi failed to set a qualifying time within the 107% requirement after an engine failure, but was permitted to race at stewards’ discretion.

Felipe Massa failed to set a qualifying time within the 107% requirement after his car was damaged during free practice, and his team were unable to repair the damage in time for him to take part in qualifying, despite changing the gearbox. He was permitted to race as he set qualified time during all three free practice sessions.

What happened in the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix?

Rosberg led Hamilton and the two Red Bulls from the start. Massa’s heavy accident at Sainte Devote brought out the safety car, and Hamilton lost places to Vettel and Webber during the pit-stop sequence.

Contact between Pastor Maldonado and Max Chilton sent the Williams into the barriers near Tabac. The race was red-flagged for repairs before Rosberg again controlled the restart at the head of the field.

A later collision between Romain Grosjean and Daniel Ricciardo caused another safety car. Sergio Pérez then tangled with Kimi Räikkönen at the chicane, leaving the Lotus with a puncture and Pérez eventually retiring.

Rosberg won ahead of Vettel, Webber and Hamilton. Adrian Sutil finished fifth and Jenson Button sixth. Räikkönen recovered several positions in the closing laps to salvage tenth and extend his sequence of points finishes.

Further down the points places, Fernando Alonso, Jean-Éric Vergne, Paul di Resta and Kimi Räikkönen completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2013 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 107 points, followed by Kimi Räikkönen on 86. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 164, with Ferrari on 123.
