Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 6 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 104 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 98. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 161 points.

Race entries

Jenson Button returned to McLaren for this race while Fernando Alonso competed in the Indianapolis 500.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton set a new benchmark in FP1 as drivers built confidence between Monaco’s barriers. Toro Rosso also caught the eye: Daniil Kvyat was sixth, while Carlos Sainz’s competitive lap came on supersofts rather than the quicker ultrasoft compound. The different tyre choices made the early order less straightforward than the headline times suggested.

Sebastian Vettel went faster still in FP2, while Mercedes struggled for pace and encountered traffic. Jolyon Palmer stopped before the tunnel with smoke coming from his Renault, and Lance Stroll’s accident at Massenet caused a red flag. Once the circuit reopened, teams turned their attention to longer runs during the final half-hour.

Sebastian Vettel led a Ferrari one-two in FP3, but the closing preparations were interrupted when Esteban Ocon crashed with eight minutes remaining. Daniel Ricciardo also lost running to a brake-by-wire failure. Jenson Button, returning to stand in for Fernando Alonso, faced a further setback with a 15-place penalty for replacement power-unit components.

Qualifying

Kimi Räikkönen headed qualifying for Ferrari, with Sebastian Vettel second and Valtteri Bottas third.

Kimi Räikkönen took his first pole since the 2008 French Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton struggled with tyre preparation and was eliminated in Q2, while Jenson Button reached Q3 on his one-off return before penalties sent him to the pit lane.

Jenson Button received a fifteen-place grid penalty for exceeding the maximum quota of engine components. In addition, he was required to start from the pit lane, as his car was modified while under Parc Fermé conditions.

Stoffel Vandoorne received a three-place grid penalty for causing an avoidable accident with Felipe Massa in the previous race.

Marcus Ericsson received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

What happened in the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix?

Kimi Räikkönen held the lead at the start and kept Sebastian Vettel behind through the opening stint. Ferrari controlled the front of the race, while the Mercedes and Red Bull drivers searched for a strategic opening.

Räikkönen stopped first, but Vettel stayed out and produced the laps he needed on the clear track. When the second Ferrari emerged from the pits, the order had reversed. Daniel Ricciardo used a similar longer first stint to jump Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

Jenson Button‘s attempt to pass Pascal Wehrlein ended with the Sauber tipped against the barriers at Portier. Wehrlein escaped, but both cars were out. Marcus Ericsson and Stoffel Vandoorne also hit trouble, while a late collision involving Sergio Perez ended Daniil Kvyat‘s points challenge.

Sebastian Vettel completed Ferrari‘s first Monaco victory since 2001, with Kimi Räikkönen second and Daniel Ricciardo third. Carlos Sainz took an excellent sixth, Lewis Hamilton recovered to seventh, and Haas celebrated its first double points finish through Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen.

Further down the points places, Lewis Hamilton, Romain Grosjean, Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen completed the scoring positions. Sergio Perez set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 129 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 104. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 196, with Mercedes on 179.
