Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 8 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 141 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 129. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 222 points.

Race entries

The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Max Verstappen led FP1 as the slippery street circuit caught out several drivers, with Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa running wide and Valtteri Bottas spinning. Sergio Perez then hit the barrier at the narrow castle section, damaging the right side of his Force India. The resulting red flag left only a brief window for further running at the end.

Max Verstappen remained fastest in FP2 but crashed at Turn 1 late in the session. Jolyon Palmer had already hit the barrier at Turn 8, bringing out red flags, while Fernando Alonso stopped with an engine problem. Romain Grosjean struggled with braking, and differing tyre choices added another complication to interpreting the quickest laps.

Valtteri Bottas set the pace in FP3, while Jolyon Palmer’s Renault caught fire early in the session and curtailed his preparation. Max Verstappen then stopped on the main straight with a technical problem shortly before the finish. The yellow flags disrupted the final qualifying simulations, including a quick attempt from Valtteri Bottas.

Carlos Sainz received a three-place grid penalty for causing a collision with Felipe Massa at the previous race.

Fernando Alonso received a forty-place grid penalty for exceeding his quota of power unit components.

Stoffel Vandoorne received a thirty-place grid penalty for exceeding his quota of power unit components and a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Jolyon Palmer failed to set a lap time in Q1, and was allowed to race at the discretion of the stewards.

What happened in the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix?

An opening-lap clash between Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen left the Mercedes a lap down. Daniel Ricciardo also fell back after an early stop to remove debris from his brakes, leaving both eventual front-runners with huge recovery jobs.

Repeated safety cars disrupted Lewis Hamilton‘s lead. During one neutralisation Sebastian Vettel hit the rear of Hamilton, then pulled alongside and made deliberate contact. Vettel received a ten-second stop-go penalty; telemetry did not support his allegation that Hamilton had brake-tested him.

Debris and a collision between the Force India drivers eventually brought a red flag. After the restart, Ricciardo swept past both Williams cars, while Felipe Massa‘s suspension trouble ended his challenge. Hamilton then had to stop to secure a loose headrest, and Vettel served his penalty.

Those setbacks handed Daniel Ricciardo the lead. He stayed clear to win, while Valtteri Bottas chased down Lance Stroll and beat him to second by 0.105 seconds. Stroll still earned a remarkable third, and Fernando Alonso scored McLaren‘s first points of the year in ninth.

Further down the points places, Kevin Magnussen, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso and Pascal Wehrlein completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 153 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 139. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 250, with Ferrari on 226.
