Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 17 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 306 points, with Sebastian Vettel on 247. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 540 points.

Race entries

Carlos Sainz moved to Renault in place of Jolyon Palmer. Brendon Hartley made his Formula 1 debut for Toro Rosso alongside the returning Daniil Kvyat, with Pierre Gasly absent for the Super Formula finale.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 as a damp circuit gradually dried. Drivers began on intermediates, with Sean Gelael sliding off and Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon spinning without serious consequences. Sebastian Vettel was first to try slicks but initially found conditions too wet. The improving surface eventually allowed more representative laps as the newly reshuffled driver line-ups settled in.

Lewis Hamilton remained quickest in dry FP2, while Sebastian Vettel had a high-speed spin at Turn 19 early in the session. Max Verstappen split the championship contenders on the timesheet. With conditions allowing a fuller programme than in the morning, teams moved from quick attempts to longer runs to prepare for Sunday’s race.

Lewis Hamilton completed a clean sweep of practice, but Sebastian Vettel was much closer in FP3 than he had been on Friday. Romain Grosjean’s spin into the gravel at Turn 7 interrupted running with a virtual safety car while his Haas was recovered. The remaining session gave teams their final opportunity to refine qualifying setups.

What happened in the 2017 United States Grand Prix?

Sebastian Vettel made the better start and took the lead, but Lewis Hamilton stayed close rather than allowing Ferrari to escape. Hamilton then passed Vettel early in the race and began establishing the advantage that would decide the afternoon.

Ferrari switched Sebastian Vettel to a two-stop strategy, giving him fresher tyres for the closing stages. Hamilton remained on his one-stop plan and managed the gap, while Daniel Ricciardo retired with a technical problem.

Max Verstappen charged from 16th on the grid into the podium fight. On the last lap he passed Kimi Räikkönen, but completed the move beyond the track limits and received a five-second penalty that restored Räikkönen to third.

Lewis Hamilton won ahead of Sebastian Vettel, with Kimi Räikkönen taking the podium place from Verstappen. Carlos Sainz finished seventh on his Renault debut, while Brendon Hartley made his first Formula 1 race start for Toro Rosso. Mercedes secured the constructors’ title with three rounds still to run.

Further down the points places, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Pérez, Felipe Massa and Daniil Kvyat completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 331 points, followed by Sebastian Vettel on 265. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 575, with Ferrari on 428.
